Question.

Is my blog looking different today? It shouldn't be, but one reader is seeing a weird template change (though I've done nothing to change it). Please leave a comment.

UPDATE: Blogger was down for 15 minutes about an hour ago. And yesterday there was some scheduled downtime. I don't know if these things are connected.

Ditto.

Looks normal to me. Perhaps when that reader's bowser downloaded the .css, it got corrupted. Has the reader tried clearing the browser file cache and relodaing you site?

Looks the same to me.

It looks the same to me as well.

Huh. How did I manage to post a minute before somone whose comment was actually there before mine? Ok, that's a little wonky, but otherwise the blog looks the same.

The page looks the same in all my browsers, though I've gotten a weird "Blogger will be down for maintenance for 30 minutes" page a couple of times when I tried to leave a comment on this and the NYT post. And of course there's the constant cache problem, and the fact that some comments don't seem to appear until I navigate to the "post a comment" page, but those are ongoing issues. I hate hate hate Blogger. Ditch it! Ditch it!

HaloJones: I didn't know what you were talking about then. Assumed you'd taken drugs.

Looks fine to me.

I did notice a few blogger hiccups on my own blog early this morning which appeared to be related to last night scheduled outage so maybe that's what is causing this person to have problems.

Looks fine in IE6 on Win XP.

But earlier this morning, I was still getting the "Blogger will be down at 4PM PST" message on a few blogs and all comments sections.

I've noticed a number of funky things about your blog over the past several weeks--and they vary from browser to browser.

The visual issue I didn't notice today, but then, I haven't been in and out as usual.

I will say that from my perspective, in my own use of it, Blogger steadily has gotten "hiccupier and hicuppier." I'd have changed away already, but I haven't resolved the issue of whether I want to go with my own customized site and host the darn thing on our own server, or what.

Good luck!

(I'm sure glad I didn't mention seeing what halojonesfan saw. I wouldn't have wanted you to think I was on drugs.)

does a new add count as "different?"

Ann, I just got an e-mail indicating similar problems with my site (comments can't be viewed, in my case; don't know if there are/have been other issues). I sent you an off-line e-mail and am going to see if I can't have some checking done.

No butI heard you look great today!

The person who e-mailed me is viewing from a Windows box using IE.

I cleared my cache and reloaded and everything's working fine now.

This does appear to be a stylesheet problem (.css file) problem, related to Bloggers updates. (As an aside: I didn't notice that scheduled update, about which I knew in advance, to actually take place at the time noted, and I was actively at the time.)

A similar thing happened with Yahoo last year when they did an update, and the stylesheet issue broke a bunch of sites.

That really is very, very, very uncool, indeed.

Blechh.

Scott: Hi! Actually, we have no snow left here. It's been kind of warm for us... in the 40s.

AJ: Thanks!

Quxxo: I don't like parasitic linking like that.

Ann, you're nice than I. I would have deleted that opportunistic puppy in a millisecond.

Quxxo tried to hi-jack this thread too? Amazing! Sorry I missed it. And the problem I emailed about has fixed itself for now.

I did see a weird template on the site this morning that made it hard to read anything - some kind of white template with a green header image. I am glad it is back to normal now. I saw this on FireFox.

I saw the same thing as halojonesfan, yesterday. Later in the day it was back to normal. I think it's one of the other standard templates and color patterns that they offer on blogger. Navy background and black letters. Virtually illegible. I said "My eyes are too old for this."

Ann Althouse said...

I really hate the idea that anyone would think I deliberately chose a template like that. Clearly, I've chosen minimalism for the blog design. If I ever redesign, it will be to something really clear and simple. I don't have great vision myself and I look at the blog all the time. Also, for visuals, I want to post photographs, and I don't want the design to interfere with them.

Ann: I don't think anyone would think you had done it purposefully. Especially your long-time audience, because it changed the format and colors of your blog all the way through this month, and everyone knows those entries didn't look like that the previous day, or week, etc. What I think is more likely, is that someone at blogger pressed the wrong button and switched everyone's format to "doom and gloom" or whatever that navy blue and black thing was called. Luckily they seemed to figure it out quickly, and switched it back.
