With all those organic, feminine curves, it's truly a beautiful machine. Its popularity among women probably stems from its lack of aggressive, angular features that dominated sports cars of later eras. Then again, I know plenty of women who would purr along with the engine of a '68 Mustang or a '67 Trans Am.

Beautiful lines, but mechanically they were disasters. lots of neat features that didn't work well in practice. Very temperamental and expensive to maintain. Just like my old girlfriend.

I think the Jag XKE was the birth of the fastback, followed by the '63 Stingray. I never owned either one but I really, really wanted to back then.

The drill sgt is right. I'm lucky I didn't have one of those XKE mechanical mysteries in a small Iowa town where no one would have known how to make it work.

Jags do seem like a lady's car. They're curvy and sleek, and luxurious, so why not? Plus, they're never in a bright color, only muted ones -- just classy and understated. It's always been MY fav. even though I'll never own one.

I've always been told that a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was the ultimate sex toy...

I have learned that we have very similar taste in cars! Outstanding photos.

I still maintain that the Sixties and Seventies Corvettes are as close as a man can come to driving a woman.

OFFICIAL DISCLAIMER: The posted photos don’t tell all. That’s why I’m merely explaining a joke some seem to have missed.

Get it?

No? Okay, let’s flip over all the cards.

LJK Setright, one of the funniest commentators on things mechanical, said the Jaguar E Type was "the greatest crumpet collector" known to man.

For a long time, Jags were always beautiful cars but terribly engineered--I still think Jags are the most elegant of mass produced cars--the fact that you had to have a permanently assigned mechanic to keep them functional was a small price to pay for their beauty (Drill Sgt has it right).

Does anyone know if the engineering has improved?

Good one, bissage, esp if you're reading the Althouse mind. I don't always see beyond the grease under my fingernails.

When I serving my Uncle Sam and was stationed in England I had a '65 3.8 'S' Type Jag. 4 door sedan, but with 4 wheel independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes, dual carbs, dual overhead cams, dual exhaust and a 5-speed. All wrapped up in leather, wool carpets and polished walnut on the inside. What a car!

Luckily I was able to do all the maintenance my self, so I had a mechanic along at all times. I never really had any trouble with the car in the two years I had it, except to replace the exhaust system, but I did find somethimes were not engineered the way American cars were. This is what leads to the American image of poor engineering- the mechanic is accustomed to having something work one way, and when it doesn't its 'poor' engineering.

I will also second the common emotion that LUCAS electrics was a Nazi's revenge.

I'd read in a couple of places that when Ford took them over, their engineers went over there and found that they spent more time on the color of the interior woodwork than on, you know, actual mechanical stuff.

But they've cheapened somewhat.

Of coarse you know someone will stroll in and pose the question to everyone else on this blog: "What's your dream-car?".....

Oh, I think I just did.

.... and the answer to my queries - Subaru SVX.

Don't laugh. It has all the hallmarks of a fine sports car. They look great (eye of the beholder?). They're fast. Handle great. Somewhat rare. It won't break the bank to buy one. And, like most sports cars, the trunk is tiny and useless - the glove compartment is probably bigger than the trunk!

Thanks, Dadgum.

You know, I’ve always considered it bad form to explain a joke, and downright rude to explain someone else’s joke, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

My apologies to our hostess.

(Even more so if it wasn’t a wiener joke, after all.)

I figure if it gets the most female attention it's because the guy driving it can obviously afford to drive something that gets like 8 mpg.
