Prof., I am watching at YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/gopconvention2012.

All I hear are lies: The greatest and best POTUS did not say: You did not build it. It was out of context. We will turn this around at our convention.

We will destroy Romney and GOP. All the GOPers who are lying about us, we will destroy them and their businesses next week.

This is our White House till Jan. 2017. Kapish!

OK. That's a fair job of papering. These conventions actually do matter, and you, Robert Cook, usually come across as someone who cares about what matters in politics.

I'm watching. On PBS, of all places.

Just saw the Gov. of Nevada politely hand the usual suspects from PBS their collective asses on a plate as he stopped them from using the 'Well, the goverment has done some good' trope - especially from Mark Shields. The Nevada governor said 'Yeah, like land grants.' Too funny.

We will focus on Romney's desire to fire people, Ryan's lack of concern about the poor people, Akin's distaste for women and their health needs, Romney's overseas slush fund, Romney's garage elevators, etc.

It will be all Romney all the time. We will also destroy all the businesses who are using my out-of-context quote.

You know when I watch a good Dem speech, I often agree with most of the themes, but I doubt most on the left have the same experience with GOP speeches.

The thing is, I know that most conservatives really believe their own stuff, and I know I do. My life is made of it - rags to riches, and take care of other voluntarily. As Ann Romney just said: "It is a privilege".

Alternatively, I don't believe most Democrat Pols believe their themes, or live them, or act upon them. Except for policy and politics, I think they actually more believe and act according to conservative values.

It's Fen's law.

Hell, I'd watch that and probably did as I was an avid Firing Line viewer back in the day.

The little animal is no fan of Bill Buckley.

And he and Cook and AP are sounding more and more alike in their desperation.

ALH said...

The "This man will not fail" line struck me as very powerful. She said it in a way that, to me, clearly came from her heart. For people who are truly "on the fence" (if there are any left), Ann Romney just made an excellent and personal argument for her husband's candidacy. I suppose if I was an Obama supporter, it wouldn't sway me in the least...but if I was a smart Obama supporter (if there are any left), I would be nervous about undecided voters comparing the president's record with Mitt's track record and character.

Anonymous said...

Again, this is Althouse and her flock's reality ie mittens has to run the table. And Obama can lose OH/VA/NC/FL and still win.

Yeah, that's the horse race wisdom if the race is close. If Romney wins by 2% or more of the popular vote, it doesn't matter how the electoral college sorts out.

I'm not so confident that I believe Romney will run away with it by 9% as Reagan did by in 1980, but I do believe that's the model for this year.

bagoh20 said...

"No matter who wins, the next President will be a schmuck and a tool of the 1%".

Oh good, we will stop having to pay 100 times our fare share of taxes, and the half that pay nothing will start pitching in. That will be great, but somehow I don't think the 1% will stop having to carry the country. Who you gonna call, the Occupy crowd?

"This man will not fail"

Politics is not business, but it's close, and in business there are men who never fail, or at least not for long, and always come back stronger. It's a pretty good bet with these men that once you give them the job, and if you give them the power, they will succeed every time, and even with men like that it is still a surprise when they do it.

There are others who never really improve what they are put in charge of. They put in time, they talk, they struggle, they move on. If they are ambitious, they still find a way to get trusted over and over with the same result.

Your call.

what an uphill battle a clueless liar like mittens has trying to defeat an incumbent.

Defeating an incumbent isn't difficult at all when the economy stinks. That's how Bush lost in '92, Carter in '80, and Hoover in '32. Voters generally don't reward failure; no matter how desperately the incumbent tries to blame other people, voters generally hold him responsible.

The only reason the race is even close is that Romney has the charisma of a halibut.

Robert Cook: I try to learn from everyone I read, including people I disagree with. However, I have learned almost nothing from you, garage and shiloh. The three of you come across as simply ignorant and mean-spirited commenters with little or no writing talent.

Choom refers to the Choom Gang, the posse of like-minded high school students which Obama led. They specialized in the high-capacity consumption of marijuana. Obama himself invented the "roof hit" where the gang would smoke and smoke in a parked car with the windows rolled shut. After they had consumed all the herb, they would tilt their heads back and inhale from the marijuan fumes which had risen to the roof of the car.

The "roof hit" is about the only original idea Obama has had, as far as I can tell.

You would know this if you followed the coverage of the David Maraniss book on Obama. Maraniss liked Obama and was bewildered that other people were disenchanted to learn what a stoner Obama was and how much of his memoir was fiction.

"Voters generally don't reward failure"

FDR won a landslide in '36 w/unemployment at 16.9%. Why, he inherited a depression and was makin' progress w/a super Dem majority. Obama has done the best he could, inheriting an economic disaster from Bush, w/a do nothing, 10% job approval congress.

Indeed, there's a very good reason cheney/bush weren't at the 2008 convention and won't attend this one as they are viewed as abject failures and cons don't want them reminding anyone lol.

Every presidential election is different ie minority vote is a lot bigger than 1980/1992 ie pundits say in order for mittens to win he needs a bigger % of "white" vote than Bush41 got in 1988.

Stay tuned.

btw, the 1994 MA senate race was basically tied and then the campaign began and Kennedy wiped the floor w/mittens. mittens won the 2002 MA gov race, barely w/49% against a Dem opponent who had a long primary process and no $$$.

And something the Dems wioll mention ad nauseam next week that willard had a ((( 36% job approval rating ))) when he left office in 2006 w/((( no chance ))) for re-election ... hence, ergo, therefore it was a non-starter.

And yes lol mittens is not likable on a good day! Yea, things have changed a tad since 1980 when the cons demi-god, Dutch, won w/50.75%. That election breaking in the last week after the 2nd debate a week before the election. And so there won't be any confusion ~ Romney does not = Reagan.

Sure, because four years after he entered office, things were better than they had been when he entered.

Things are worse now than the were when Obama entered office. Even though he had a filibuster-proof Democratic majority that greenlighted everything he wanted, even though he spent vastly more money than FDR did, both in absolute and GDP% terms -- things are still worse.

Christie obviously is not a plain white bread person. He responded to the question in the air with a nice revelation about his Sicilian mother etc. But he also did two very interesting things. This convention is supposed to appeal to the undecided woman. He gave priority of place to his mother, 'She was the driver in the automobile of our life and dad was the passenger' giving equal rights to women to lead and make their own decisions. And then he said she was, and he would be, a 'truth teller.' The fact that he said something nonstandard about his parents reinforced that going forward in his talk.

In Churchill's England 1940, people stood up to the Blitz. These were the same people who supported Chamberlain's sellout at Munich only three years before.
The Republicans are trying to make a similar turn around in this country, trying to turn people from being "Magnificent Ambersons" into being just a down to earth group that says: "you know what, we've spent too much and we have to fix it."

The Magnificent Ambersons were a family in novel who were so locked into the vision of their own magnificence that they could not prevent their decline. That's how the Democrats strike me now - they are so locked into their vision of their magnificent social redemption of us all that they can't see they are ruining schools, cities, states, budgets, the future because there is no way to pay for what they mandate.

Bender said...

I didn't watch it, but I can read the text now at Drudge, so let's do a running commentary --

Starting out, Christie is all "me, me, me, I, I, I."

Next he goes on the "greatest lesson Mom ever taught me." Apparently his mom was Machiavelli, "it is better to be respected than loved." He tries to make that a half-assed joke that she was talking about interpersonal relationships with women, but if that is the case, Christie has a seriously distorted idea of what love is. In any event, he goes on to suggest that somehow a desire to be loved is a bad thing for a leader.

Love is bad. How inspiring.

Moving on, he clarifies that it is a leader's desire for popularity that can be bad. Good point, but if that is what he meant, why the dumb-ass slam of love? More clarification: what he means is that leaders need to say "no" more often.

We're the people of "NO!" How inspiring again.

"Tonight, we choose respect over love." Again with trashing love? WTF? That's your rallying cry? No to love! "We are not afraid. We are taking our country back (from love)."

He goes on to talk about various people who broke their backs to build the country, but then he says, "Now we must lead the way our citizens live." Oh, apparently, that "we" means our leaders, not the everyday people who built the country. Christie does not say it, but implicit in such a thought is the Obama idea that America's success comes from its leadership.

How about instead of leading with "no," you just get the hell out of the way? Inspire us with pledging to get government off of people's backs.

But is that he says next? "No." Next he inspires us with, not freedom, but the hard truth of sacrifice! Our leaders are going to demand more and take more from us.

More me, me, me, I did this and I did that, and then "the people of New Jersey stepped up and shared in the sacrifice . . . I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it: our ideas are right for America. . . . We believe in telling hard working families the truth about our country's fiscal realities. . . . Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear." No! Sacrifice!

How is that for inspiring the troops? Stands right up there with "Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did.”

(to be continued)

JAL said...

@ oaf

Who is the racist here?

Bender said...

(continued)

After echoing Mondale, Christie then goes back to echoing Obama, "It's a moment like this where some skeptics wonder if American greatness is over. How those who have come before us had the spirit and tenacity to lead America to a new era of greatness in the face of challenge."

America's greatness comes from its leaders! Government is the answer to our problem! None of this Reaganesque freeing people from government "leadership" to be able to prosper for Christie.

"Tonight, our duty is to tell the American people the truth. . . . We all must share in the sacrifice."

Sacrifice! Pay up! Do without! You didn't fuck up this country, but you sure as hell are going to pay for fixing it.

Then Christie doesn't want his children and grandchildren to have second-class citizenship, but a second American Century. Huh? A "second" American Century? Linguistically, whatever he means here, what is said is that we should be "second." He's being too sly here, whatever he means by an "American Century." (Does he mean that Romney will foster a hundred years of American exceptionalism? Sure, it is not calling for a thousand-year Reich, but that's an overstatment just a bit, don't you think?)

Nearing the end now, with more Christie-centrism, "If you're willing to stand up with me for America's future, I will stand up with you. . . . If you're willing to hear the truth about the hard road ahead, and the rewards for America that truth will bear, I'm here to begin with you this new era of truth-telling." (Will he end with "I accept the nomination"??)

"Together, we stand up once again for American greatness" by saying No! Sacrifice! Love is bad!

What a horrific speech. Glad I didn't watch it. You don't want love Christie? Well, you sure as hell ain't going to get it after this -- and you ain't getting any respect from me either. I cannot envision even ONE undecided person standing up and saying "Alright! Yes! Go Romney! We want No! We want Sacrifice." after hearing this.

And then there is this:

http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2012/08/22/analysis-election-factors-points-romney-win-university-colorado-study-says

A University of Colorado analysis of state-by-state factors leading to the Electoral College selection of every U.S. president since 1980 forecasts that the 2012 winner will be Mitt Romney.

The key is the economy, say political science professors Kenneth Bickers of CU-Boulder and Michael Berry of CU Denver. Their prediction model stresses economic data from the 50 states and the District of Columbia, including both state and national unemployment figures as well as changes in real per capita income, among other factors.

“Based on our forecasting model, it becomes clear that the president is in electoral trouble,” said Bickers, also director of the CU in DC Internship Program.

According to their analysis, President Barack Obama will win 218 votes in the Electoral College, short of the 270 he needs. And though they chiefly focus on the Electoral College, the political scientists predict Romney will win 52.9 percent of the popular vote to Obama’s 47.1 percent, when considering only the two major political parties.

Well, they could be wrong this year, for the first time in 32 years. Then, again, maybe not.

She gave a good, nice speech. He's an ass.

I don't know if her good, nice speech won any votes, but he's still an ass.

Where you been Victoria?

Uh, Bender, let me say that I do not 100% disagree. But your tone is just vicious!

Also it might benefit you to realize that here in NY he has wide popularity/respect, and may appeal to voters who are not you. Both my parents, reliable Dem voters, were impressed with him.

Politics is just one good time after another.

Today I saw a bunch of people stand up and say they love their country and are, frankly, worried about the direction it's headed. These people had real ideas for how to solve problems in America. And, gave us enough respect to tell us it won't be easy and it will require saying no to unnecessary spending.

I also saw people parading around in vagina costumes, planning a forum for Islam to give advice to the Democrat party, and ginning up false political advertisements. They're pretending Obama hasn't come within an inch of destroying our economy, selling us down the river to Vladimir (when he has more "leeway") and bowing to tinpot dictators. To prove the absolute emptiness of their position they focus on fear, hate, lies and distortions instead of their record. They have no soul and it's painfully obvious.

Yes, welcome back Vic!

Nichevo -- What you have to understand is that Bender is a whiny bitch. He has bitched and whined about Romney. He has bitched and whined about Ryan. Ryan, you see, is not fiscally conservative enough.

And now we have Bender bitching and moaning about Christie.

The guy is a bitchy moaner. He's never going to be happy. He's just going to pollute the world with his whines.

All that said, it is hilarious. I myself picture a very old man with Coke-bottle glasses and a computer from last century. And a yard that gets vandalized often by those damned kids in the neighborhood who don't show respect the way his generation did, back before the War and the color television.

Was this before, or after, they approved the platform planks calling for devoting federal spending to cracking down on consensual adult porn and online gambling? :)

"Now you can talk again and waste everybody's time."

Apparently like edutcher, Nichevo is fascinated by everything I post. Otherwise he would easily skip over them. Indeed, I obviously struck a nerve as he goes out of his way to be ostentatiously noticed.

"But your tone is just vicious!"

Nichevo's irony is duly noted.

Skipping over posts is a rather simple process, except for the truly obsessed! But since I'm wasting everyone's time, surely no one will read this, let alone comment.

Oops!

Like wow, Shiloh thinks I am fascinated by him, and that he struck a nerve.

I've literally never heard that before! The imagination! The originality! The mind reels! At the novelty of having any response one dares make to Shiloh's drivel characterized as fixation!

(that's how you do irony son. I laid it on thick so you might get it)

Did that work for you in fourth grade? Because that is almost as good as "I know you are but what am I!"

Literally and non-ironically, what is your purpose here? I don't understand people like you.
