"I'll be damned, we're Republicans."

NM Gov. Susana Martinez, who'd been a Democrat for many years, like her parents, talked — in her convention speech last night — about a conversation that led to that punchline.

Well goolllleeeee.

That ought to seal that Latino vote.....

She also delivered the punchline about the $5 trillion debt and Obama--"he built that"

One of the best lines of the convention. And even better because I have no doubt at all there are thousands upon thousands of Dems feeling that way just now.

Doesn't conform to your stereotype or what?

You're pro-choices, right?

A chiwawa whistle from a race monitor.

And NM is solid Dem on the national level, so much so the RNC, turdblosson, etc. is bailing on Heather Wilson. As mentioned yesterday, NM is one state which won't be disenfranchising minorities anytime soon as Susana knows where her bread is buttered, eh.

Doesn't have to be stolen. Barry is pissing it away . . .

Shiloh, please stop getting your insight from Huff Post or someplace similarly uninformed. Your analysis is wrong as much as it is right, at best.

And New Mexico's past Governor one day said, "I'll be damned, we're Libertarians!"

Damn, she was good!

And she will go on to bigger things.

Be prepared for a shock. They elected this lady for a reason.

This is what desperation looks like!!

Waiting for Lindsey to call her a tia taco or something.

Because the Lefties love the Latinos like they love blacks who stay on the plantation and women who stay in their kitchen.

PS The little animal has given up telling us how purple TX will be, so he goes to NM.

Somebody needs to remind him Hispanics, like women, are anything but monolithic.

They have jazzed that up a little. The previous version was that they got back in the pickup, looked at each other a little sheepishly, and she said, "Well, I guess we are Republicans then."

But that's all right. La Tejana Susana is a keeper!

I only saw her and a bit of Ms. Rice's speach last night. Gov. Martinez's speach was great all around. Tremendous imagery of a small young Latina standing watch in a cold dark remote New Mexico church parking lot clutching a .357 Magnum ( I think). That visual's got everything.

"They elected this lady for a reason."

Indeed, she's a very good politician who has kept a low profile in being a competent gov. Plus it didn't hurt that she was Hispanic. Just like her predecessor, Richardson.

"Your analysis is wrong as much as it is right, at best."

You mean like the reasons Althouse voted for Obama, in her own words.

Indeed, if Obama loses my analysis will be wrong. If he wins, 99% of Althouse con analysis will be wrong.

Of course there's astute political analysis and then there's ((( wishin'/hopin'/prayin' )))

ie mittens has a chance because he will have the $$$ advantage, although it does not appear to be working in Ohio for Romney or pipsqueak Mandel.

Bill Richardson is an opportunistic carpetbagger from Mexico City and readily switches his "Hispanicness" on and off according to circumstances.

Gov. Martinez is on a longterm mission to clean up the mess Richardson left us with.

Like Walker, like Christie, like Kasich?

Then how come so many people know who she is?

This lady is the wave of the future, like Rubio.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

You mean Marine Mandel, swabbie?

Both are tied in their races in OH.

Most "Hispanic" New Mexicans are Democrats for reasons dating back to Territorial days when Republican (though some of them - like Tom Catron - quite freshly minted) carpetbaggers from the East ran wild out here.
However, there are Republicans too, especially in southern New Mexico where some are descendants of "The California Column" that came here to save New Mexico from the Confederate invasion, and some became Republican in reaction to the ex-Confederates drifting west after the Civil War and roughing up the local population. Family traditions and clan alliances are strong, and some date back to long before any Anglos - let alone republicans - showed up out here.

PS I think the little animal just started warming up his excuses for why the Demos got their heads handed to them.

Latino's vote for Democrats more than Republicans, but there were still a whole lot of "Viva Bush!" bumperstickers here in New Mexico in 2004.

Hispanics make up something like 54% of the population of this state and it's not as solidly Democratic as the Democrats would like to think. Obviously Martinez was elected. She won over another Hispanic lady, IIRC, so the choice wasn't between Hispanic and non-Hispanic.

When it comes right down to it, though, race shouldn't determine political opinions, and race shouldn't be *assumed* to determine political opinions.

When you think about it, "Your name is Ortega. You must vote Democrat," is every bit as racist as "Your name is Ortega. You must eat a lot of beans."

Oh, and for what it's worth (again)... an Hispanic girl in one of my English classes was explaining that her Hispanic instructor in a different English class had docked her grade because she appears too Anglo. Not a doubt in her mind about it.

But please lets assume that Hispanics are a unified group. Group culture, group think, group voting.

edutcher is hangin' his hat on a Columbus Dispatch poll. Good luck w/that!

Speaking of political analysis, Nate Silver was "fairly accurate" in 2008.

For all "you" # crunchers out there ...

As opposed to all the network ones skewed by 6 to the Demos?

BTW, what's so wrong with the Columbus poll, other than it blows the little animal's FUD out of the water? the Hill seems to like it.

Lessee now, here's a few off Townhall:

Columbus Dispatch 8/15 - 8/25 Mitt Romney: 45%, Barack Obama: 45%

Ohio Poll/ Univ of Cin. 8/16 - 8/21 Barack Obama: 49%, Mitt Romney: 46%

Purple Strategies 8/13 - 8/14 Mitt Romney: 46%, Barack Obama: 44%

Rasmussen Reports 8/13 - 8/13 Mitt Romney: 45%, Barack Obama: 45%

Don't look so good, do it?

Take care, little buddy.

Funny, the trolls should be happy, if they're ahead and the Romster is such easy game.

Clearly they're not and they're scared.

Romney will win by at least the same margin as President Obama in 2008, and depending on the next couple of months, we could actually be approaching Reagan/Mondale territory..

Martinez seems like an appealing enough person, but she is in what is pretty much a dead-end job in a nowhere state. If, Jeb runs in 2016 I guess picking her for VP might make some sense, but that's about her only path to higher office, it seems to me.
