"Important fact: This letter was to his first wife."

Key comment in a comments thread about a contract Kurt Vonnegut made with his pregnant wife in January 1947.

The contract comes from this collection of Vonnegut's letters, which will be released in October.

If you're looking for something to read now, here's that book "Mortality," which Christopher Hitchens wrote as he was dying.

And here's a biography of David Foster Wallace — "Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story" — which just came out today.

While Hitch was battling cancer he took the time to rip the Tea Party in this video. "I've seldom seen in my longish life grown-ups behaving as stupidly."

And here's an essay by Hitch on Romney and the Mormon issue.

Vonnegut was kind of a slob, wasn't he?

b. I will not track dirt into the house needlessly, by such means as not wiping my feet on the mat outside and wearing my bedroom slippers to take out the garbage;

You should not need a contract with your wife for this.

Thanks for this, Althouse. I just ordered the Hitchens book.

OafingLoaf, Hitchens criticized the Tea Party for their isolationist foreign policy. I don't recall seeing you at the last meeting of the War-Mongering Neocons, Loaf.

Or was that you in the lavender tutu?

Yeah, cause English Marxists are the ultimate arbiters in what constitutes a valid political movement in America.

You betcha.

Kurt was a jerk. Wife has babe in arms, must do all these things again. No R&R for HER.

Never much cared for his stories and novels, either.

Not a fan, and talk is cheap.

I had no idea that there were so many humor-challenged readers of Ann's blog. That contract is fall-down, hug-your-sides, gasp-for-breath funny. Vonnegut was making fun of himself.

Lighten up.
