Sarah Palin is "scary thin"...

... and she's writing a fitness book.

Celebrities have got to keep moving, looking for an open niche.
Her tips, by the way, are newly frosted, and her nails appeared to be a shade of silver-blue.
"Tips... newly frosted" apparently refers to the highlights in her hair. Highlights are done in strands, right down to the roots and not on the "tips." If there's a space between the scalp and where the light color begins, that means the highlights are not new. The hair has grown. (I know, because I get lowlights.)

As for the silver-blue fingernails, it seems that Michelle Obama got there first, and Ann Romney got there third. But for some reason, light blue is the fingernail color of choice for political ladies this fall. Do they want to avoid the aggressiveness of classic (but blood-like) red? Or do they like the cyanotic look of impending death?

ADDED: Apparently, "frosted tips" is a hoary trend for men:
Boy band members of ’90s and the early aughts were the biggest proponents of “frosted tips,” but no athlete, actor or bank teller has been immune to this god-awful style and its powers of douchebaggery over the years. Do frosted tips transform someone into a terrible human being, or do terrible human beings opt for frosted tips? Let’s find out.

I've only ever heard that 'tips being frosted' thing in reference to men with short hair and doing that surfer dude thing.

Scary thin? In that photo, Palin looks fine. She looks young and healthy. Look at her arms. Are they too thin?

This is scary thin.

Carol said...

Maybe she can take Jane Fonda's place.

What a thought.

Icepick said...

She doesn't look 'scarily' thin. Thin, yes, but not scarily so. She certainly doesn't look like Callista Flockhart, to name one who IS frighteningly thin.

So now her famously high-end glasses are referred to as "lenscrafter-y glasses"?!

I've always wanted to go for a jog with her. I'm surprised she hasn't done some sort of charity win-a-run-with-Sarah auction. I can't be the only one who'd bid.

deepelemblues said...

Isn't that sexism refreshing, Professor?

Certainly better than a video of an idiot rabble rabble rabbling about her Obamaphone, which needs to be forcefully criticized (not her behavior or attitude or apparent ideas about life, but anyone daring to show the video) because of her skin color.

Steve Austin said...

This is an old story from last week.

I think she looks terrible. Had some plastic surgery or something. Can't figure out exactly what.

Looked much better 15-months ago on her bus tour.

That was my thought as well. And of course, the blue nail polish which is fabulously stylish on Michelle will be called trailer trashy on Palin.

Other than the shoes, which look clunky and difficult to walk in, I think Palin looks just fine.

She should start some sort of 'Run for the Republic' 5k. I bet she could raise a ton of money for charity.

clint said...

It's a terrible picture -- not quite John McCain with horns and blood bad, but still really unflattering.

Anonymous said...

I am not a fan of the blue nailpolish, but I think both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Romney looked beautiful in their pink dresses at tbe debate. It was a very flattering color for both of them.

Ann Althouse said...

She looked better before. I think she's too thin. It's changed her face and made it less feminine. Also her hairline is receding in a way that seems like something that would happen on a man who's going bald.

I don't think this is a good presentation for someone writing about fitness, especially compared to the way we remember her first appearance on the public stage as the Alaskan governor who liked to go running.

Sorry, the healthful impression is gone. She's another southern California lady now, and it's boring and not something to emulate. She's thrown away what made her so refreshing.

Frosted tips is a hot "new" thing in womens hairstyles. NOT the dbag ones that men use, but a more subtle lightening of the last 3-4 inches of a longer hairstyle. My middle spawn just graduated from cosmetology school (NOT astronaut training) here in Michigan and she has them and does quite a few. It has a name, but it escapes me at this time.

A gal's gotta slim way down to fit in one of those binders.

She looks great, but it's got to be a bit strange to be thinner than her daughters, this coming from the mother of three grown daughters, who's weight I could not aspire to match, too many good things to eat before I die.

Ann Althouse said...

" but I think both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Romney looked beautiful in their pink dresses at tbe debate. It was a very flattering color for both of them."

They both had to wear pink so we wouldn't think only one of them didn't care about breast cancer.

After the fitness book, a little rehab can't be far behind.

She looked better with that additional 15 pounds on her.

Amexpat said...

She looks fit in the picture, but for some reason it made me think of Billy Bob Thornton. Not sure if that's what she's going for.

Anonymous said...

She look a bit Meade-ish in the face to anyone else here?

Ann, people who have lost a great deal of weight, do lose hair. I wonder just how much she lost?

Icepick said...

Oaky, maybe AprilApple's link wasn't THAT bad, but Lord it wasn't good!

rick rogers said...

I'd say she is more scary ugly than scary thin in that picture. But cameras can do some funny things to the way people look. Take it from a terribly unphotogenic handsome man.

urpower said...

Health & fitness are Palin issues and woven with her politics at many points. See at least her Runner's World profile & jousting over low-carb dieting & running- (huge sources of conflict in the '08 campaign), also a theme in her Alaska t.v. show. America is suffering for being passive physically with poor nutrition.

Noticed it when she did "Hannity" after the first debate, but I thought it might be just me.

Have a couple Cinnabons, Miss Sarah.

What Palin has looks like grown-out highlights.

The blue nail polish reminds me of the pearlescent whites and pinks we used to wear back in the day, looked good with a deep tan, which we didn't realize made us at higher risk for skin cancer.

I prefer blood red.

Nonapod said...

Women over the age of 40 that are very thin don't seem healthy to me. It's especially bad if they lose roundness in their face and you have accentuated skeletal features.

Fred Drinkwater said...

She looks like she's been doing the Insanity workout.

Menahem Globus said...

She looks like a normal lady her age who is an active athlete and perhaps training for a race. I hate the shoes but to be fair most women's shoes are hideous.

Wince said...

She's another southern California lady now, and it's boring and not something to emulate.

Palin does look a little like Sharon Osbourne in a couple of those photos.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Whatever happened to the liberal upper west side mantra that you can never be too thin or too rich? It doesn't apply to Conservatives, that's what. Sarah is just f-ing hot! Live with it, you ugly liberals.

ricpic said...

She doesn't look 'scarily' thin.

I agree. The whole article is bitchy. Witness the crack about wearing a tank top under a crop top "thank goodness," when in fact Sarah's midriff puts 95% of women to shame.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

The reader comments are NOT complimentary to Tina (I wish I was as interesting as Sarah) Brown. Bitchy bitchy bitchy.

john said...

There is nothing appealing about that photo. Palin just looks ratty, and as Ann says, in a Southern California way. With different boots, she could hop on the back of a chopped Sportster. Her hair already has that pealed back look.

OTOH, she did have lunch at KFC; that'll put on a pound or two.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Also her hairline is receding in a way that seems like something that would happen on a man who's going bald.

I don't think it is receding. She normally wore her hair with substantial bangs, but now it seems to be more pulled back from her face showing a higher forehead.

In addition, many menopausal women tend to have thinning hair in general.

Perhaps a bit too thin for her age. She has the look of an overly avid runner.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

If Palin gained 5 lbs - the bitter obsessives would say "She's scary fat!"

She looks fine. But anyone who is reasonably fit looks "scary thin" to the bloated blobs who now comprise the majority of Americans.

To each their own, bagoh. I think she looks like Mike Myers in drag. And, dear lord, those shoes! The whole look absolutely screams "trailer trash."

And I LIKE Palin. But whomever's advising her (or not) on clothing choices isn't doing her any favors.

MayBee said...

Ha!
I had not even thought of it being pink month.

Darcy said...

Love her look in general. Like a gym rat. Yeah, she is getting a little thin, but most women her age would LOVE to look like her. The jealousy rages on. :)

MayBee said...

The article is obviously written to sound unflattering.

Nobody says hair is "frosted". Highlights, balayage, ombre (the ends lighter than the top). But not frosted. Frosted is home-kit, or 1970's. They chose that word carefully, to cut.

MadisonMan said...

I agree that she's thin. The difficulty with thinness is that you can't be thin and wrinkle-free. But there's not too much sun in Alaska.

She's not scary-thin -- or you can't tell from that picture if she is.

BaltoHvar said...

As long as she doesn't duck into some Salon and leave the door open so we can watch her shave her head, I think she'll be/is fine.

Carol said...

In 2006 Palin was at that perfect weight, which filled out her face. She looked natural, like she didn't have to try to stay in shape. But it's hard to hold that line. You tend to either go one way...or the other.

If she'd put on weight people would really savage her. So she had to go the other way. Shows in her face.

Darcy said...

@MadMan
And that's just a bad angle of her face. She's not very wrinkly, even with her face thinner.

Darcy said...

Btw, I've been within 5 feet of Sarah Palin just this year. She is even better looking in person. I think happy people just have a glow, and she's got it.

bgates said...

She's thrown away what made her so refreshing.

What made her refreshing was her appreciation for the values America was founded upon.

I really can't tell whether I'm being Margaret Dumont to Althouse's Groucho, or if she really is the vapid bimbo she portrays in some of these comments.

BaltoHvar said...

Looks like an AirStream Jackie O!

As a contrast to "scary thin", here's sculpted athleticism.

paminwi said...

Ann, I don't generally like to correct you but at least according to a panel on C-Span Michelle Obama's nail color is gray. Not pale blue.

I'm not looking at her face. Her legs, butt and waist are perfect. Women have no idea what looks good to men. Here's a clue: shoes, makeup and hair is not it, despite the 90% concentration on those by women.

Ha, I had to delete and repost because I spelled "waist" as "waste".

I would have gotten reamed for that.

MayBee said...

Overhead sunlight is unflattering, as is the dryness in LA.
I have a lot more lines that show up in my face when I'm there. It's kind of shocking.

chickelit said...

So long as we're judging appearance...try googling photos of Isabel Wilkinson, who wrote the piece for the The Daily Beast [lol]. IMO. she must struggle to hide the nose and there's no fitness program that can help with that. Plastic surgery?

BarrySanders20 said...

Not scary thin, but not a good pic. She looks like the lady in Sons of Anarchy (Jax's mom).

Chip S. said...

She's thrown away what made her so refreshing.

Or had it beaten out of her by the media.

Not that I disagree at all w/ what bagoh20 said. But she's certainly got a different aura now.

BarrySanders20 said...

Ditto bagoh. Curves and legs. And showing off a nice booty makes it damn near impossible not to look.

Darcy said...

LOL, you guys. But I'm learning something here. Due to taking up running, I ran everything else off. I'm going to try to keep the booty.

Pasta for lunch, maybe!

BarrySanders20 said...

Darcy,

Wife turns 44 soon. Though she tells me to stop, sometimes I am compelled to whisper to her how exceptional her booty looks. Some combination of swimming, diet and genetics is at work.

Sir Mix-A-Lot took it to extremes, but the man had a point.

Good on you, Mr. Sanders!

Fair enough, bagoh. I'll give you the butt and waist. She's not in a skirt, so I reserve judgement on the legs. And frankly, I mention the shoes because I'm one of the very few straight men who like a woman who applies her makeup, does her hair just so and picks flattering shoes.

As I said, I like Palin. And heaven knows I'm far from Brad Pitt myself. But it's an extaordinarily unflattering picture and the entire look is simply trashy, IMO.

Oh. Prof.A..she's happy, living in doubters minds still rent free, and has skill enough to do whatever she wants.

I admire independent, strong men and women who succeed promoting positive messages. To rarely,if ever; stoop to the level of the condescending "Status quo" who'll jump on Palin because she continues to matter.

Really surprised you bit on more superficial negativity--the only thing those who fear her can produce to deny her respect. All women want health, beauty and most important brains, but real women with abundance --diminish all women when they front a"looks too thin, too fat--hair thin,dyed--shoes brown" message.

War on women, much? Or just conservative ones? Oh, and..got any pics or articles on Michele O(the food monitor 1st lady) photo'd in same position--?

Her hairline didn't recede - her hair is just combed back and then poofed up. (That family's hair is not going anywhere, anytime.)

She's too thin now with a lollipop head. It hurts your face at that age, making it look both more ravaged and more saggy.

One of the things that made her look so good for her age when she debuted was that she thin, but not type-A, blue-state yoga mom thin. Now she is except she's wearing biker chick clothes.
