De Blasio's wife did not wear blue jeans to the slain policeman's funeral.

She wore degradé blue trousers, and the degradé effect looks like faded denim. There were lots of angry tweets about her disrespectful appearance, presumably from people who don't know enough about degradé, but approximately no one does. If appearance is what matters and no one can figure out that you're not wearing blue jeans, it's the same as wearing blue jeans.

Michelle Obama has made fashion faux pas too -- like the blood spattered butcher's apron she wore on 2008 election night.

They looked exactly like blue jeans. She knew that when she put them on.

Faded blue is not somber despite the designer's insistence. The Mayor's wife (I forget her name) degraded the service in any case. Hard to walk that back.

It is significant that the designer stepped forward to take credit, just like the comet landing fiasco. They never need defend their work (rightly so); the criticism is always the occasion.

The effect achieved is like the name of The Moody Blues' song misinterpreted as "Knights In White Satin."

I don't care what you call them. She was dressed very inappropriately for a funeral.

Then again lefties are likely to go for comfort before tradition. Or more likely she doe not know better.

Why? Why wear what look like blue jeans to a funeral? Obviously to make a point.

So, pants that are designed to look like jeans and are priced like standard off-the-rack dress trousers (about the same as jeans worn by the somewhat frugal fashion conscious.) I don't get it. Is it supposed to be ironic? Some sort of in joke?

And yes, everyone should have a black suit in the back of the closet. Doesn't matter if it's cheap or fits particularly well. There are times when it is the right tool for the job. This was one of those times.

"Does it put us on the slippery slope of personality erasure, as it could mean all public figures live in such fear of mistaken sartorial semiology, they resort to only the blandest styles, and we find ourselves in a uniform world of plain dark suits?"

The dreaded personality erasure! Quelle horreur!

There was a time when only black or charcoal gray were worn to funerals, as a fitting expression of the somberness of the occasion. I'm not sure why this pundit thinks people need to "express their personality" at a funeral, but I suspect it has something to do with the childish concept of "authenticity".

If the response is, "Hey, it's okay -- it's degradé!", perhaps the De Blasios aren't quite the populist heros they're made out to be.

FWIW, I once was fluent in French (very rusty now), and I had to look up "degradé" in my French dictionary.

These people are antipolice and do not care who knows it. DeBlasio ran against the cops in the election and was elected by the wealthy who think a peaceful city is a civil right. They don't know any better.

Orwell did:

We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.

I know it was a paraphrase of his writing but he knew it.

pst314 said...

Bob R "Is it supposed to be ironic? Some sort of in joke?"

Not necessarily. I yield to no one in my contempt for De Blasio and all similar leftists, but this sort of sartorial cluelessness is very common. About half the people at my father's funeral wore jeans, dockers, colorful shirts, and assorted casualwear. Very few work black or charcoal or navy blue suits.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

So, Chirlane Mcray didn't wear blue jeans. She somehow managed to wear a designer outfit that was seen as inappropriate for the funeral of a slain cop by a sizable fraction of the public.

I'm sorry, but just how stupid does one have to be to pull that off? Who does she think she is --- a Hollywood starlet on the red carpet at the Oscars?

It seems that any way the De Blasio crew turns, its ass is behind it.

Assuming (even though it is obviously, by definition a mistake) that everybody is incapable of understanding what is and isn't correct about these pants. What a disappointment to see Meadehosue give up and say that everybody being wrong makes everybody correct.

Absurd.

When I Google it, the first definition is, "treat or regard (someone) with contempt or disrespect." I assume it really is defining "degrade" and not "degradé" but I still thought it was funny.

The police who turned their backs on the Mayor provided a greater insult to the memory of the dead officers and to their families--and to themselves--than the Mayor or his wife has achieved...or intended.

NotWhoIUsedtoBe said...

Agree with Robert Cook. The intentional insult is worse than whatever faux pas the mayor's wife committed.

The Godfather said...

My guess is that she didn't intend disrespect, that she is so clueless that she thought designer (not)jeans are acceptable at a funeral.

In an earlier time, a Mayor and his spouse would look down on the benighted cops and their wives who didn't know what what to wear to a soiree or a funeral, and laugh behind their hands; sad, you know, but they just don't know better. Now it's the Mayor and his spouse who have no class. Sad, but they just don't know better.

You know, there was a time that I was proud of being a native New Yorker.

I am not a robot.

Mark said...

Disrespecting the office of mayor at a funeral is the bigger issue.

This is a fairly petty gripe. Did the family notice? I bet they saw the backs turned toward the casket.

Michael said...

Robert Cook

Actually you are quite wrong. The mayor believes that NY is mainly made up of people like you and so he thinks nothing about assuming everyone knows the cops are racist. He ran on that premise, he made up a story about telling his son to be careful with cops (you do know, I hope, that thst story was a lie, a lie on the back of his son), he flogged it for the whole time he has been in office. This kind of preening has consequences because, happily and alas, most people in NY do not in fact share your beliefs. And so he is getting only a sip of the medicine he doled out by the gallon. Our president has had to reckon with the results of his own loose and intemperate talk.

I think sometimes you have to consider the perception of what you are doing. She had to at least worry that people would *think* she was wearing jeans. Maybe in the greater scheme of things this is trivial but sometimes it is the attention - or lack thereof -- to such details that is most telling.

Wearing black or at least a dark color, in my mind, shows respect. You make the effort to wear clothing that is appropriate for the occasion. Her outfit - in my opinion - was too casual, especially for a mayor's wife.

I'm one of those people who presumably "don't know enough about degradé." Indeed, before looking at this post, I'd never heard of it; after looking at the post, reading the linked article, and spending about 90 seconds googgling "degradé," I am now confident that I do indeed know "enough" about degradé.

Best I can tell it's a term used in English by fashion-conscious people who'd like to seem French, and because it's French and because this is fashion, we're supposed to understand that these clothes are intended to look old and degraded even when they're new.

And we're also supposed to applaud and think ourselves smarter now for knowing that.

Hey, my jeans aren't old, they're degradé. Clap for me, I'm a cool kid.

I don't much care what the NYC mayor's wife wears anywhere. But when she wears clothes that look old and degraded, she ought not be surprised if people also infer that she's contemptuous of all the rest of us who don't know enough about degradé.

Some African American women don't look good in all-black or charcoal gray clothes. Perhaps the mayor's wife should have worn white to the funeral.

Police officer Wenjian Liu was born in China. Wiki on color in Chinese culture: "White is . . . the color of mourning. It is associated with death and is used predominantly in funerals in Chinese culture. Ancient Chinese people wore white clothes and hats only when they mourned for the dead."

McCray has spent her life being transgressive. It's central to her identity. Her first thought is never "how can I make others comfortable." Her goal is to create discomfort. Not a bad goal under many circumstances but if you are the wife of the mayor, attending the funeral of an assassinated cop, continuing your pattern of causing discomfort is rude and disrespectful.

I don't think anyone would have noticed if the cops liked the mayor. As it is, not just the cops but those who like the cops more than they like the mayor will be alert to any breach of decorum or etiquette on the part of the mayor and his wife. And I think the mayor and his wife are susceptible to such breaches......Only a very klutzy politician picks a feud with the police. And consider that woman whom his wife chose as chief of staff. They're not very good at what they do.

Billy Oblivion said...

If she was the idiot wife of some tiny town in upstate NY, then *maybe* we could pass this off as just parochial stupidity.

She is the wife of a mayor who's "domain" is (in population) about the size of Switzerland, Israel or Austria. Her husband regularly deals with people and leaders from *many* nations, and I'm fairly certain there is at least 2 people there who advise on protocol.

But either way, wearing a faded blue pantsuit thingy to a funeral? Shit, I've seen gang-banging hoodrats with more class.

rcommal said...

She didn't wear a dress, or at least a skirt, is the real point. A funeral does not call for a Casual-Friday outfit circa 1980s. It calls for at least M-R 1980s garb in terms of biz dress-up, though not the funeral attire actually called for (still) in that era. She is an Official's-adjunct, let's not forget.

Those are, I think, the points in the nutshell. Aren't they?
