Movies streamed in January...

... by readers using the Althouse Amazon portal: "American Hustle," "Born On the Fourth of July," "Bride And Prejudice," "Coda," "Consumed," "Crossed," "Guys and Dolls," "The Book of Life," "Uprising."

Thanks to all who support this blog by using the Amazon portal. And, no, I can't see who's buying what, so feel free to buy whatever you want and watch whatever you want.

ADDED: Why so many movies with 1-word titles beginning with the letter C? I wondered in the comments and said:
Made me wanted to suggest "Compulsion" and "Contempt." I'm sure there are many others. "Carrie." "Cops." Is "Cops" the name of a movie?
I knew "Cops" was a TV show, but it seems that such an obvious name should be the name of a movie too. I look it up on IMDB and end up with this fantastic movie-poster image:

Plot summary:
Police officer Benny is obsessed with American police cliches and livens up his own boring everyday life with dreams of duels with bad guys. But poor Benny and his colleagues doesn't have much to do in the small town of Högboträsk. Most of their days are spent drinking coffee, eating sausage waffles and chasing down stray cows. Peace and quiet is the dream of every politician, but for the Swedish authorities, the lack of crooks is reason to close the local police station. When the cops investigate a suspected act of vandalism, they realise that they themselves may be able to raise the crime statistics high enough to stay in business.
Great! But you can't buy that in the U.S. (unless you've got a "region 2" DVD player).  There's some chance of an American version, presumably to be called "Cops." Adam Sandler bought the rights a decade ago.

"Bride And Prejudice" sounds interesting. Was it about interracial marriage?

@chickelit, I'll confess to streaming "Bride and Prejudice". It's a very we'll-done (and funny) modern take on the Jane Austen classic. It's set in India, and concerns a well-off traditional Indian family with several grown daughters for whom their parents are trying to arrange marriages. The prospects are successful young Indian men who travel back from Britain and the US to find wives. The Elizabeth/Darcy plot involves the independent second daughter and a wealthy young American who accompanies one of his Indian colleagues on the journey. The interracial element plays a part, but the Austen themes and situations from Regency England transition very well to the Indian setting. Plus there are some great Bollywood songs and dances that stand in for all the English country balls. I highly recommend it.

Bride and Prejudice is excellent.
Great fun.

American Hustle was very, very good. I imagine it was rented by a new Bradley Cooper fan since Cooper was nominated as Best supporting actor in that one two years ago.

Cooper will get this year's Best Actor Oscar hands down. He was pitch perfect playing a Scots-Irish Texan who could not quit fighting for his men.

At one point the wife and I were stunned that Cooper was also the exact image and persona of my son, especially in the scenes where he attended a friend's funeral.

The one liners in American Sniper were also exactly right:
"Let me see you down there or don't let me see you again."
"We take care of our own."

And many more.

Eastwood was true to his heritage.

With the prices being charged to stream movies these days I'm starting to miss Blockbuster Video. And I wish someone would file an antitrust case against the movie studios for their deal with Redbox not to show new DVD releases for 30 days. That's when the price of VOD started getting crazy.

I am streaming Amazon Prime Instant Video freebees using an HDMI direct connect to my TV.

I find the Prime videos and Prime Kindle deals are excellent ways to get back the Prime subscription fee. Sorry that this probably doesn't enrich Althouse but I do buy all other Amazon stuff through the Althouse link.

That list looks alphabetical and stops pretty abruptly after C.

Admit it: you don't want to admit to us or even yourself that one of us is watching Zardoz.

The list gets hung up on one-word titles beginning with "c." Made me wanted to suggest "Compulsion" and "Contempt." I'm sure there are many others. "Carrie." "Cops." Is "Cops" the name of a movie?

Amazon is also following Netflix by developing their own TV series for streaming. There are a number of interesting pilots now available. On Saturday I watched a pilot for Man in the High Castle, based on Philip K. Dick's novel. It was very good. I hope it gets picked up for a full season.

And that, in one sentence, is why piracy will never be eradicated (and why I don't even consider it immoral).

Try Hott Fuzz.

Uh, "Hot Fuzz". Blame it on the tremor.

The "law of small numbers" was developed/discovered because Ladislaus Bortkiewicz noted that numbers beginning with small integer values show up more frequently than large numbers, and on a specific distribution. A violation of the law of small numbers is recognized in a court of law as evidence of tampering with number systems, like bank accounts.

Pay homage to the newly discovered "law of C," revelation of significance pending.

Also very interesting that Swedish police now wear uniforms inspired by Hollywood TV shows.
Like the saying goes: The whole world is getting Californicated!

Is it that much different from Super Troopers that Adam Sandler would want to bother?

Not exactly high brow, but I have a soft spot for the Broken Lizard guys, because I went to school with them.

Available full length (1hr 26 min) on YouTube.

In Hungarian(?) with no subtitles

I find many full length Hollywood movies on YouTube as well as many mini-series like Rumpole, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Corner, and more.

I've never been able to figure out what's up with that.

just as an FYI, all region DVD players are very common and easy to purchase. (I have two, one of them all-region Blu-Ray)

Silly professor, don't buy a region 2 DVD player, get an ALL-region DVD player. Or buy one (through the Althouse portal, natch') for the Anglophile on your list, since many English shows are region specific ...
