"A man who nested in a giant sequoia tree in downtown Seattle, drew a flock of Twitter comments, with some cooing over #ManInTree..."

"... and others condemning him for damaging the 80-foot-tall... city landmark before coming down on Wednesday."
Seattle police negotiated with the bearded man from the window of a Macy's department store building some 30 feet... from where he had been perched in the tree branches since Tuesday, said Officer Patrick Michaud. Michaud said the man "created himself a little seat, maybe even a nest up there at the top."...

Police closed off a small, triangular city block at the base of the tree to protect the public from falling objects, including the man himself, who became a top trending topic....

"Has anyone tried sending a cat up to rescue him? I think they owe us one. #ManInTree," tweeted @TheChrisAsbury on Wednesday.

We planted a redwood 50 years ago in Pennsylvania, then we sold the land (before the shale boom, unfortunately) I would like to go back there and see it now.

Isn't that special? Oh, such fun we have with the mentally ill! Thank the gods for Twitter, it makes it so much easier!

giant sequoia

I know as a California native, that this is the name of the species, but Seattle, come on now. An 80 footer is a runt, when the average is 150-250 feet and the largest are above 300 feet.

It is quite common for hippies in the NW to climb trees and live in them for years protecting the spotted owl.

I once saw a man trying to get a cat out of a tree and I had an inspiration and said

Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?

His bio-breaks = health hazard. But the important thing was his feelings!

4th and Stewart is the northern edge of the downtown shopping district. Of course, police and fire are required to over-respond, and shut down streets to protect the citizens. It was a huge mess, and created traffic jams. He spent 25 hours in the tree.

I'm really not sure why anybody responded to this situation. I spent a lot of time climbing Douglas fir trees, and nobody cared.

I joked that a tranquilizer dart and trampoline was in order, but the guy was a typical mentally disturbed guy, of which there are many in the downtown area. I get it's not altogether a laughing matter, but one must giggle past the graveyard every now and then to survive this life.

Anyway, apparently he didn't do serious damage to the tree. The leader is still intact so it will just look funny for a few years.
