"If there has been a single defining characteristic of Melania Trump’s public profile over the past year, it has been her relationship with sleeves."

That's what you were just thinking, right?

The sentence is the first line of "For Melania Trump, 2017 was the year of the sleeve" by Robin Givhan in The Washington Post. How does Givhan work through that thesis?
The mere fact that sleeves are even considered part of her fashion profile has a lot to do with her predecessor, who more often than not shunned them. Michelle Obama made sleeveless dresses a style signature....
Oh. Obama made the absence of sleeves her signature, so getting sleeves back on a First Lady counted as a thing.
Trump’s sleeves are the mark of a fashion aesthete who is willing to cast aside practicality in favor of line, silhouette and proportion. Her sleeves tell a story of an exceptional life, one that is now lived inside the White House security bubble....

Trump likes to wear her overcoat draped over her shoulders. It’s a fashion tic...
A fashion tic. It's like... it's like. Something makes me want to say it's like The Christmas Mouse. Ah, yes! Suddenly, I remember: The New Year's Tick!!!

2017 was The Year of the Crazy. We need a new year. Get ready for 2018. You can get excited about the arrival of The Christmas Mouse. Right now, I'm ready for The New Year's Tick.

It's chaos!

Will we have open war on 5th ave between the sleeved and the sleeveless? Swift would be ecstatic.

I think Michelle Obama was entranced with the articles about how "toned" her arms are from all the workouts she does, and she often wore sleeveless dresses to show off those arms. It's a fashion choice, as are Melania Trump's dresses more often having sleeves. Seems pretty silly to make a big deal out of it, in either case, but the Washington Post's fashion writer has been silly for quite a while.

Hence the shoulder cut-out. Can't we all get along ?

Is it a fashion statement, or a modest matter of decorum?

How many people simply wonder if she and Donald Sleep together? I almost never think about married couples' sex lives. But in part, I think about the Trumps because of the Underwoods' separate bedrooms in "House of Cards." I'd bet a cocktail that Melania has a separate bedroom. And that if she had her choice, it would be in a separate city.

If I am right or wrong, don't you think that we will know within the next three years?

Katherine said...

@Unknown, 12:25 PM: I do think that Obama often wore sleeveless dresses where it would have been more appropriate to wear sleeves for official functions. Decorum is a welcome change, but I still don't think it's a big deal.

JFK and Jackie had separate bedrooms in the WH. I don't think Jackie like sleeping in the wet spots JFK produced with the WH staff.

Nearly all First Ladies had separate bedrooms. It doesn't mean they and their husbands didn't have sex.

Givhan finds Melania's sins to be privilege and aestheticism. Gotta be something, dontcha know.

2 sleeves.

2 walls.

2 genders.
2 terms.

Deal with it.

What couple wouldn't want separate bedrooms (if they could afford it or happen to have a big house)? I think it would be good to have 3 bedrooms — one to sleep together in and a separate retreat for each.

I could even see the advantage of 4 bedrooms for a couple -- and I mean a couple who love each other and enjoy having sex:

1. The classic shared bedroom for sleeping together.

2. The man's retreat.

3. The woman's retreat. (I'm assuming a heterosexual couple, but make adjustments where needed.)

4. A room set up especially for sexual encounters.

Thanh God Hillary did not win. If she had, the Bedrooms in the white house would be in use by Marina Abramowic and her sub-cultists.

A lot of demented Trump-haters projecting their hate for him onto his wife.

Trump is so gross, how could any woman want to sleep with him? Melania looks like a hostage silently screaming for help in her husband's presence, which of course she would be, since he's so gross. She's waiting till he gets impeached and she can finally divorce him.

Her life must be a living hell.

You've one upped me Professor. That fourth bedroom never came to our mind. But we totally agree on the first three. The best part of it is having a full master bath and closets for each to get ready for dates, parties and Church, etc.on time.

Having a separate bedroom available is nice. It's a place to go if one spouse has a bad cold and doesn't want to keep the other spouse up due to coughing, blowing nose, tossing and turning etc. Also good if one spouse is on a pager 24/7 and could get "beeped" at 3 am.

The separate bedrooms can work as dressing rooms, and that can accommodate different habits, like leaving clothes all over the place or wanting things put away.

What do Michelle's & Melania's choices mean in terms of the right to keep and bare arms?

Two legs, one into each pant leg.

Two hands, and two mittens. Baby, it's cold outside.

Make an article about Melania only because you really want to talk about Michelle. Ugh.

Meanwhile, Melania's wide, high-waisted belts are a distinctive fashion that she completely ignores. So many stupid metaphors about cinched-in emotion that we'll never read...

Ann Althouse said...

Melania must need people helping her with her clothes and makeup and hair in ways that take a lot of time. These people should not be crossing paths casually with the President.

She should have a separate room for sleeping and probably a few other separate rooms for various things she needs to do with other people that shouldn't involve her husband.

I'm guessing Melania recognizes the loss of muscle tone in that area and dresses accordingly. Even if she looks better than 99 percent of the other ladies her age.

I once worked with a woman named Robin who was a bitch on wheels. That's the only female Robin I ever knew.

I have a favorable opinion of male Robins (with the exception of Batman's annoying sidekick). Robin Yount. And Robin Ellis, the Brit actor who played the title role in the original PBS "Poldark" series. I had a crush on both of them once.

Napoleon I used to go around the clock and just sleep 10-20 minues at a time when he felt like it.

It would be well to end the bare arms fashion. The women run the thermostats up to 80 to feel comfortable.

BTW, who has a "relationship with sleeves?" That's absurd.

Although from what I've heard from men and discovered online, adolescent boys sometimes have relationships with socks. Messy ones.

It's a European thing, going back to the beginning of the last century. Watch some old Italian movies. When an actor pretends he is European, he'll do the coat-on-the-shoulders thing.

In the Navy, the expression was Hung like the Sleeve on a Pea Coat.

FDR had a lot of kids with Eleanor. You'd think that they would have been into separate bedrooms, but apparently not. This was before the invention of internet porn so people had to make do.......I'm pretty sure Trump and Melania still get it on. That's the whole point in marrying a model thirty years younger. They're a comfort in your old age......I wonder when the last time Bill and Hillary had sex. It must have been years and years ago. Sadly, Hillary will never be so broke that she needs to write a tell all book, but such a book would be worth reading,

Wouldn't it be interesting if Hillary had an epiphany, repented, apologized and then wrote a truthful tell-all book about her and Bill?

Why do people assume that Michelle's arm were toned from working out? She could just have abnormally high levels of testosterone. The rest of her body is congruent with that theory. I didn't raise the issue of Michelle Obama body parts but I'm happy to give my opinion.

kentuckyliz said...

Should we read Melania's sleeves as a slap to the inappropriate sleevelessness of Michelle?

If so, we should also read the cinched waist as another bitch slap to Michelle, who really didn't have much of a waist.

About a year ago, several US clothes designers were refusing to make clothes for Melania.
Can anyone report what happened to those? Did they sink into oblivion while the ones who leaped at the opportunity prospered wildly? Are they still trying to make the pants suits for bag-ladies?
