I watched the National Victory Parade at a spot near 21st and Constitution Ave. Best parade I've ever seen. Let's do it again on Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.

So the sources say they'll tell them more when firm details are finalized and that they don't even have a date, yet it is being reported as a done deal that it will be a jingoistic North Korean esque propaganda tour? It is almost like the WaPo feels it has to goose its own stories.

Details of the meeting, including who attended and Trump quotes (i.e. all the sinister stuff), are attributed to "an unnamed military official".

The B-2 flying over the Rose Parade is surprisingly awe-inspiring in person.

Is there a rule against military parades?

Following Matthew Sablan, I too suspect the truth is more like Trump asked about something like it, or suggested someone look into it, and it's reported as a commanded done deal.

He floated the idea.

Well, why not. The cheese eating surrender monkeys (aka the French) apparently still have this sort of parade, so why not this country, with a far bigger and more powerful military? I can't remember the last large scale military parade in this country. I do remember mostly working class draftees returning from Vietnam being spat upon by college kids with either 2S deferments or double X chromosomes. I say, why not? Have a military tray parade in late summer or early fall when Congress is around, and maybe we can go into the next election with a better understanding of which members are patriotic, and which are far from it. It is one thing to dis the President at the SOTU. Quite another to do so to our military, serving in harms' way around the world to keep us safe here. This is something that a lot of Trump's base would love ve, and esp more when progressive heads start exploding.

Funny that ARM immediately jumps to the Kim Jong-un comparisons when the actual inspiration came from a parade that Trump attended last year in France with Macron and his wife.

Ari Fleicher tweeted something I agreed with. Intellectuals and elites will be horrified at a military parade. The rest of the country -- probably 75% of the people -- will love it. I love the pomp and circumstance and I love seeing the power and might of our military. Most of the country love celebrating the women and men of the armed forces.

June 8, 1991

"National Victory Celebration Parade Bands played, troops marched, flags flew and military weaponry and equipment rolled down Constitution Avenue during the $12 million National Victory Celebration Parade in Washington, DC. The parade, marching before a reviewing stand where the president, vice-president, members of the Cabinet and their spouses watched the proceedings, was the main event in the National Victory Celebration marking the victory of the Persian Gulf war. Stealth bombers, Patriot missiles, tanks, and other military hardware were featured in the parade, as were hundreds of troops from the war. A huge crowd applauded the weapons and troops as they passed down Constitution Avenue. Narration was provided for the parade by Major General Streeter, commanding general for the military district of Washington, and Willard Scott, weatherman and television personality

Military parades seem too much like a trope of totalitarian regime to me optics-wise. I mean... yeah, I love the military and martial displays as much as the next conservative and I love the fact that it'd undoubtedly drive the usual suspects into stratospheric hysterics, but I don't like the unfortunate associations military parades have with repressive dictators and tyrants. I don't think this is such a hot idea. But I've been wrong about so much when it comes to optics I just don't know anymore.

I can recall as a child when Armed Forces Day, in mid-May, was a significant holiday, with military parades and open houses at military bases. When I was about 5 years old - probably in 1956 - we lived in my dad's home town of Albany, GA, which had both Turner Air Force Base, then a SAC facility, and a large US Marine Corps supply depot. I can remember going downtown on a beautiful Saturday morning for a parade, with marching marines, tanks, APCs, bands, etc. I have a very good memory of it. After lunch at our favorite hamburger joint we went for tours at the air base and the Marine depot. I recall big aircraft - I think B-52s - and my brother and I crawling over tanks and APCs at the Marine depot. I wish I lived near a military base now and that we still had these celebrations, would love to take the grandkids. Great memories.

Of course ARM goes right to comparisons with North Korea. His poor, addled brain can't comprehend the fact that those oh-so-cultured French have military parades every year. As reported, that was the inspiration for Trump's comment, and personally, I think it's a good idea. But to Leftists or self-proclaimed (but completely disingenuous) "moderates", it is the epitome of a dictatorship.

Well, go ask Macron how he likes being a dictator.

When I was stationed at Ft Bragg NC with the 82nd Airborne Division, we loved to do parades. We took great pride in our appearance. Busted starch that day, every spot on our jump boots were spit shined, our uniforms were immaculate, and we marched with pride, and in step.

Not sure about the troops these days. It might end up being an embarrassment, and you know the troops that I'm talking about.

Seriously, the editors of the NYT were assured he'd be impeached by now and they're duty bound to keep this up until he is.

Let's give them a hand for continuing to find creative rumors to stretch into news. Especially since it's been quite a while since Comey could plausibly leak inside info to them.

There was that one day they thought they might not have something negative to run, but boy oh boy did that "two scoops of ice cream" story bail them out!

Chuck said...

Is Scott Adams still skeptical? Are Trump fans claiming this was a fake news story?

Because the White House basically confirmed it, without being specific about any details of a parade. And multiple sources are confirming it as well, down to the details of when Trump personally requested Pentagon planners to work on it.

And because I don't want to hear anything about how the New York Times and the Washington Post can't be trusted on this, let's link to Breibart:

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/02/06/white-house-confirms-donald-trump-wish-for-military-appreciation-parade/

And Fox News:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/02/06/pentagon-says-trump-ordered-washington-military-parade.html

It took only a matter of hours, for Scott Adams to be proven wrong on this one. Now maybe, Trump and his communications team will think twice and reverse course. That's a possibility. But Adams was saying that he mistrusted the Washington Post's floating the story. And WaPo has now been shown to have been right.

Today on Morning Joe, Scarborough suggested this be a mass veterans’ parade instead. I concur, but probably not for his reasons.

A vet parade would attract antifa, blm, and their fellow travelers.

The DC police community, used to major events, would not let it degenerate into a Charlottesville incident.

Instead, you’d have great footage of antifa and blm throwing tantrums in isolated areas.

Just in time for the midterm elections.

Who are you for: gramps toddering along with dignity under the flag one last time, or some wanker in a black hoodie wiping his but with the flag one more time?

Parades though? Meh. Not that I don’t appreciate the stuff the boys do for us, I really do.

Here is a choice for our liberals, given a choice, parades, or war in Libya and getting involved in a civil war in Syria?

And who gave that Stinger missile to the terrorists? We know that Hillary, Obaman, and the CIA gave missiles to the “good guys” in Syria and one of them ended up shooting down an American helicopter in Afghanistan, where thankfully, no-onw was killed.

So I am thinking I would rather a guy who likes parades than a lady who likes wars.

I like the local parades of veterans, but a Veteran’s Day observance in DC, with high school bands, especially for example, from the heavily black high schools here in South Florida, you get some drum corps stuff that is incredible, stuff like that. It would be great. Hopefully no missiles on trucks though.

Back in college, my favorite football game each year was the Air Force game, because they always had great flyovers. Nothing beats having a C-5 flyover as slow as it possibly can go and still stay in the air--that thing is so huge and it really can fly low and slow. Your mind just expects it to fall out of the sky.

Awesome.

Naturally people like Chuck would be horrified at the idea of celebrating the military. I mean, what if Trump attends the parade in a closed room overlooking the route so people won't see him--that way he won't be "reviewing the troops as a dictator" or something. Of course the left and Chuck would still be horrified. Maybe we can get Inga there to spit on them--great optics for their "We hate America so vote for us!" campaign they are engaged in.

See, recently we had the coup in Turkey. And the plotters failed to get enough of the military on their side, and their coup failed. So a helpful reminder to the left that the guys with the tanks and guns support Trump may in fact be appropriate, so they can perhaps think things through before they attempt a coup.

Here you go again. I regularly point out instances where Trump is lying. What does that have to do with the U.S. military?

I didn't even accuse the Trump administration of lying. I think Sarah Sanders artfully confirmed what I expect is a totally true story; that Trump wants to hold a grand military parade.

What I did in my post was to ridicule Scott Adams for presuming that the story was fake, when it was soon confirmed as true.

I don't hate the U.S. military. I don't even hate the idea of a military parade, in general. I do hate Scoot Adams, and I do hate Donald Trump personally.

I attack Trump as a liar only because Trump is in fact a colossal, psychopathic liar. "John Miller/"John Baron." Investigators in Hawaii. "Doctor-inflicted autism." The biggest electoral college win since Reagan. "Thousands" cheering the fall of the WTC. You get the picture.

I don't oppose everything that is associated with Trump. I didn't oppose Jeff Sessions, or Betsy DeVos, or Neil Gorsuch, or Scott Pruitt, or Scott Gottlieb. But you did. Exactly how are you morally superior to Trump again as you claim?

You didn't "attack my policies"! You made up what you imagined to be "my" policies, in your own mind. And this is about the tenth time that I have told to stop doing that, Vance. You seem unable to resist the temptation. And what it is, is an indication of how little you understand what I write about most of the time. You have to create a cartoon version of me, to attack instead of simply making a point of your own, or asking me if you have a question about what my position might be.

You're just not all that smart, Vance; and you're not very well-informed. I don't want to have to answer your defamatory characterizations of me or what you think I believe. I don't really want to have to respond to you at all.

So do us both a favor and stop cluttering these pages with your attacks on imaginary positions that you make up about me. Again I say; quit writing about me and to me.

So a helpful reminder to the left that the guys with the tanks and guns support Trump may in fact be appropriate,

If the guys with the tanks and the guns support Trump, they don't belong in the military. Their oath is to the Constitution, not the president. They are also required to disobey any unlawful order. The strength of our country is that the military is deliberately isolated from internal politics.

That you, and buwaya, think it should be otherwise is scary and frankly unAmerican.

the point is that when it comes time to overthrow the government as your side is plotting to do, it never hurts to remind those so inclined who owns the guns.

Who exactly on my side is trying to overthrow the government. The FBI that has never had a Democratic director? The Justice Department, the FBI, and Mueller, the first two of whom were appointed by Trump and the third appointed by another Trump appointee.

Consider what happened to Rome.

There would have been no Gracchi, no Marius, no Caesar, had the circumstances of the times not corrupted the institutions that should have maintained the Roman constitution.

The inability to restore the underlying society to a state that was compatible with the constitution made it impossible to continue in the ancient mode. The institutions tasked with maintaining the constitution were in the hands of interests that depended on it, unmodified, for their power, so were induced to resist reform. Its not clear that reform was possible anyway.
Which led to, of course, a victory for reality.
Which victory was not on the whole a good thing.
Historical forces are often malevolent.

As for Trump, he is a man akin to Spenglers view of the Gracchi, and other such reformers, that they were opposing the historical tide. A noble effort but futile against greater and impersonal forces.

LOL

And then, Blumenthal and Shearer worked with the Hillary henchpersons in the FBI and DOJ and obama team to weaponize the lies into a fake counter-intelligence OP to defeat candidate Trump and then, when that failed, to overturn the election.

WASHINGTON —The Pentagon has turned down Donald J. Trump’s request for a grand military parade in Washington, D.C., citing a sudden outbreak of bone spurs that would prevent men and women in uniform from participating.

Harland Dorrinson, a Pentagon spokesman, said that, within an hour of Trump’s request, more than a hundred thousand military personnel complained that they were suffering from acute cases of bone spurs that would make marching in such a parade a painful ordeal.

“In the history of the U.S. military, we have never experienced a bone-spur epidemic of this magnitude,” the spokesman said. “Regrettably, however, we have no choice but to issue thousands of deferments.”

A statement from the bone-spur sufferers said that they would continue to valiantly serve their country around the world in a non-marching capacity, and offered an alternative to their participation in Trump’s proposed pageant.

“President Trump is welcome to march in the parade all by himself if he would finally like to enlist,” the statement read.”

I'm not American. History is an uncomfortable guide to the fate of fond delusions.

Your constitution is obsolete already, as it does not take into account the actual structures of power in your polity. It does not take into account the enormous power of the regulatory state, of its making of laws independent of Congress, of its intricate and extensive melding into the private power centers.

And that's just one thing. The bigger problem is that your constitution was made for a different people with a different culture. The modern American (or most of them) are not the sort that could or would use the US constitution as intended.

And you already have an instance of the bureaucratic state attempting to meddle in politics to elect someone they prefer, and to hamper or overthrow the President. You have evidence of active sedition on the part of powerful servants of the state.

This was predictable. Expect much more.

And along the way, President Trump even outdid his own expectations and slashed at least 11 major legacy items of former President Barack Obama, including cracking down on the open border, slowing recognition of communist Cuba and effectively killing Obamacare by ending the mandate that everyone have health insurance or face a tax."

It is an informal culture where the laws are, if not regarded as suggestions, mainly considered totems to be acknowledge in passing, lest they harm you. There is some interesting stuff in Grassley/Graham's referral to DOJ. Here's what the G/G referral tells us.
(1) The October 2016 FISA warrant application seeking surveillance of Carter Page disclosed that Steele compiled the dossier at the direction of a political client.

2) At the time of the October 2016 warrant application, FBI believed Steele had not previously disclosed dossier information to anyone but FBI and his client.

(3) FBI came to learn Steele made a media disclosure in October 2016, broke off its relationship with him, and noted this in its subsequent warrant renewals.

(4) FBI believed that was Steele's first media disclosure, and the agency continued to represent as such in the application renewals.

(5) In litigation documents made public in April 2017, Page is revealed to have made media disclosures prior to October 2016.

(6) FBI did not, subsequent to April 2017, include in warrant renewal applications this new information that Steele had previously lied to the FBI about media disclosures prior to October 2016.

(7) The G/G referral states, "Instead the [post-April 2017] application still relied primarily on [Steele's] credibility prior to the October media incident."

Remember when lying to the FBI was supposed to be a big deal?...good times, good times...

And even after knowing Steele had lied, the FBI pretended he had not in their FISA submissions.

Not a smidgen of "magnificent" obama corruption.

Not even a smidgen.
