There's a comment signing-in problem...

... which Blogger is working on.

Sorry if you're having trouble. I've gotten a lot of email about it. I'm sure it will be fixed relatively soon. Meanwhile, you needn't harangue me about leaving Blogger, because I am leaving Blogger. It will happen soon.

You have assurances from your buddy nitecruzr aout that?

Leaving Blogger?

Well, it's your blog. But every other platform out there is crap. Looks crappy, takes too long to load, even more inconvenient to post comments (especially those with all the facebook/twitter/etc. interfaces).

This site is far cleaner, far more user-friendly and reader-friendly than places like Ace, Anchoress, HotAir, PJM, National Review, Washington Post, et al.

Every one of these places that moved to "better and improved" platforms ended up worse.

The sign in works now. It was dead for most of the day yesterday. Ain't we got fun.

Starting with althou.se (rather than Blogger.com) helped.

For once, I'm getting in OK (how did they miss me this time?), but thank you for keeping us informed.

As I said, we need to let each other know what's happening so we don't all go berserk trying to find a problem that isn't on our end.

.Se you soon, at your new location.

Great!!

Now do please do something about the pop-ups.

My spam blocker, virus program (Kaspersky)sounds like a machine gun when I load your site. It is blasting tons of google crappola each time I load.

Ah! So that's what the funny sounds are about.
Thanks DBQ!

Bender, where the hell have you been?

I couldn't comment on any blogger site yesterday until late in the afternoon.

I ran into a problem that sounds like this a few days ago. I went to Google, logged into my account there, and reset my password. That seemed to work.

Bender -- I don't think the issue is the platform so much as the user interface. Althouse should be able to use a similar theme on any platform. If she hosts her own install (of Wordpress for example) she has complete control over look and feel.

I assume she's not off to some conglomeration where all bets are off.

The look will be even cleaner (more minimal) than what you are seeing here now! That was the idea.

There will be more ads, however. It's going to cost money (instead of being free, like Blogger), but it will be done so that I come out ahead (substantially).

And I'm not joining any conglomerate. How could the URL be althou.se if I were?

Yes, that's it exactly.

You must be using Internet Explorer. I use Firefox 4 with the NoScript and Ad Block Plus add-ons and I haven't seen an ad of any sort in years.

I didn't even know people still used stand-alone spam blockers.

Good point. Has Bob Wright made an offer yet?

Testing . . . . .

Ooooh, it works today.

Althouse is rich?

Hope so. That would really piss off the trolls.

KNOWN ISSUES FOR BLOGGER

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

I don't know about this Blogger thing.

I am glad that you are moving.

I haven't had the sign on problems that others have. Or not too often. But Blogger seems to drop my posts a lot here. Some unreconcilable error or conflict with another post.

There is a saying that different generations of software engineers have to learn the same lessons each generation. Well, these conflicting edit errors I get are very strong indicia that blogger was coded by a bunch of kids just out of school. It was inevitable that more than one person would try to comment on the same blog piece at approximately the same time. The solutions to this problem were well known 30 years ago. Blogger still hasn't figured it out.

What is most frustrating is that I will save all my Althouse comments for awhile right before I post them, JIC. Then, after a couple of days of this, I will start slacking, and bingo, Blogger strikes again. Happened just a half an hour ago. I had spent maybe 15-20 minutes on a comment on medicine, and forgot to copy it, and it was lost.

The transition cannot happen too soon for me. So, thanks.

I disagree. And I think most of the blogs you named are much easier to use than this one is.

Thanks, Althouse. I'll be a lot more likely to hit that tipjar, to be absolutely frank. I like the blog, but it's a hassle sometimes because it's blogger. I never bother to say so, because it's free.

Google is evil and wants to track everything written and everything commented on so they can hold it against you politically when they find it convenient to do so ... such as if you start to hurt Barack Obama.

No self-respecting American should allow this barely-transparent co-conspirator of the Democrat Party this much power over our lives and privacy.

Republicans should enforce our anti-trust laws and force the break-up of Google. (That this would have the side benefit of hurting a bunch of Democrat busybodies and nosers-in is merely the icing on the cake).

"even more inconvenient to post comments (especially those with all the facebook/twitter/etc. interfaces.""

In other words, someone likes to say embarrassingly stupid things, and the universal commenting systems make it much harder to have multiple personas.

With blogger, a shill can troll and troll and troll, and then start a brand new persona with no way of tracking it (not even IP addresses!).

With the openId style interfaces, normal people who just want an easy way to say things they really believe have greatly enhanced convenience. Trolls have somewhat less convenience.

I think that's very amusing.

Anonymous said...

" ...With the openId style interfaces ..." everything you write can be traced back to you directly.

So you better be very, very censorful about what you say about Barack Obama or it will come back to haunt you personally in ways you never, ever thought about.

First, no it won't. I criticize Obama with my full name sometimes. I don't care. It's not like the government is out to get me. Millions of people are showing up in person to the TEA party rallies. It would be ridiculous for Obama to target them at the individual level.

Like I said, the blogger advantage is for liars and mobies like you.

And anyone who is really paranoid can just use a clean laptop and an unsecured wifi hotspot, such as every McDonalds, or their neighbor's house.

I have thought Disqus was useful in my experience of the Atlantic. On the subject of blogs, I wonder what prominent bloggers do in going to other sites; I mean do you try to come up with a clever handle?

Nevadabob;
You are definitely in the "get off my lawn" level of crankage.

I did think you quite understand the Republican Party concern for "statism".

What blogging system are you going to?

For a heavy traffic blog like yours, I'd say avoid WordPress, as it does not hold up well in heavy traffic. A single link from Instapundit would bring your server to a screeching halt. (That was probably the #1 thing Blogger had going for it, the fact it could handle such traffic.)

Since comments are such an important part of this blog, I'd stick with the commenting system built into whatever blog platform you choose, and not a service like Disqus. Being another cloud service, you could end up in the same position as with Blogger, losing all the comments.

For the simplicity of upkeep and robustness, SquareSpace.com may be a good move. It's a proprietary system, but they have an excellent system for importing existing blogs (including comments), and exporting them if you want to move to something else.

"And I'm not joining any conglomerate. How could the URL be althou.se if I were?"

The same way Instapundit.com can point to pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/

Kylos said...

Shawn, as long as Althouse's tech installs the WP Super Cache Plugin there shouldn't be a problem.

Anonymous said...

Kylos,

Normally, I think that Super Cache would help. But given the role that comments play here, the limitation that anyone who has posted to the blog will not receive a cached page could be considered a major strike against it.
