I have to admit that I am shocked that NPR has ever read the Declaration of Independence. That document is against everything NPR stands for.

Doesn't this make them racist Teabaggers?

This is their updated version, which is fine. I liked their older version better, including Red Barber.

I knew listening to it that there'd be commenters here who would be surprised.

The good thing about that was that before they began reading they did a segment about the huge numbers of our populace who do not know from whom we declared independence. Many did not know the year. Then came the reading.

Cool.

Now if we can just get them to love the country that the document is all about.

No big whoop, they got the idea from the Congress types reading parts of the Constitution, but it's not cool so few kids know this country's history, except maybe the Howard Zinn version.

Another gift from that "distinguished educator" and "just another guy" from Little Zero's neighborhood, William Ayers.

Now if they would only pay heed to some tradition the other 364 days of the year. Instead of looking through their collective noses at it...

Does anyone else find it curious that NPR would take the occasion of Independence Day to read the 'Declaration' of Independence? Seems they love to prop up and promote (big) liberal government which represent anything but independence.

Maybe not so much 'propping' but certainly anything but criticize, especially democrat administrations.

Happy 4th to all Althousians.

NPR has done this for at least 20 years--even included Red Barbor doing some readings of the paragraphs in the declaration.

This is something for which NPR should be criticized.

oops--misspelled Red Barber's name--he was a florida cracker who had a regular segment with "Colonel Bob" Edwards--Red was the voice of Florida football for a long time starting, IIRC in the 1930s--Thank you Red
