"Iranian protesters ransacked and set fire to part of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran on Saturday..."

"... after Saudi Arabia executed an outspoken Shiite cleric who had criticized the kingdom’s treatment of its Shiite minority."

And:
The former prime minister of Iraq, Nuri al-Maliki, has said that the execution of the prominent Shi'ite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia will be the downfall of the Gulf kingdom's government.

Sometimes, when you are busy beheading, sexually enslaving little girls, stoning women to death and throwing homosexuals off buildings, you miss some of the more basic "teachings" of humanity.

Not to worry though.

The Western leftists continue to fall all over themselves excusing this behavior. So, you know, no biggee.

Why is Maliki still alive? He's the man who created ISIS.

Religion of Peace. Yup. Nothing more peaceable than ransacking and burning an embassy. Maybe the Saudi Wahhabis can get a taste of what we Americans felt when our embassy in Benghazi was burned.

Iranians have been well trained to attack embassies at the orders of the regime - just not at all sure which regime of which country is pulling the cords behind the curtain.

Also it is easier to attack an embassy at home than it is to climb the 900 mile border fence under construction in the desert by the Saudis.

Proving once again the royal families disintegrate over time into mediocre people. Think Obama cares more about the Saudis or more about preserving his legacy with the Iranian deal? A betting man would be advising the Saudis to get used to looking at the bottom of the bus.

I said 15 years ago that the US should use the 9/11 attack as an excuse for the long overdo reorientation of our position in the Middle East. It would have been the perfect time to jettison the Gulf Arab states in favor of a detente with Iran. Instead, we pissed away the opportunity and have actually allowed our relationships with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to become more dependent. We've been pursuing a ridiculously childish foreign policy since the Clinton administration and don't show any signs of changing course in the near term. So utterly depressing.

Birkel said...

The Saudis are in mortal danger. They recognize Obama has given regional power to the Iranians. They executed the "cleric" knowing the Iranians would respond. Now, one wonders what these acts will bring to the region and the world.

My guess: Saudi Arabia buys nuclear weapons from somebody, perhaps the French.

mccullough said...

Excellent. Let them all kill each other. Their religion is as bad as the Aztecs'.

Sunni are the vast majority of Muslims in the world and Pakistan, mostly Synni, has a few nukes but no missiles to deliver them. Iran is close to building a nuke and has developed missile capability. So my money is on the Shia here unless the US puts a few nukes in the Holy Land of Saudi Arabia as a deterrent to the mullahs. Hopefully we finally tell them to fuck off and that you get what deserve after 9/11.

People cut Lennon more slack than Hagar cut for LBJ despite similar needs.

Some people even named their kids after Lennon. Will Trump get as much?

don't forget he used to beat on his ladies. Ike turner was vilified forever, but Lennon imagined there was no heaven, and sang All you need is Love.
He did seem to change his ways (I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved. Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene. And I'm doing the best that I can) but there was that side of him.
The song Run for your life might be more realistic than All You Need is Love when it comes to Lennon.

The "Iranian protest" at the Saudi embassy was no less sanctioned and controlled by the Iranian government than ACORN, SEIU, Black Lives Matter or Occupy protest are controlled and funded by democrat operatives and this administration. Political theater is all.

Iran will have a great new year funding their proxy terrorist thanks to their Obama Bonus.

@Birkel:

Iran is an extremely weak state that is nowhere close to being a "regional power." They cannot project any significant military power outside of their borders. Saudi Arabia has the third highest military budget in the world. It is number one in terms of per capita military spending, and it is number one in percent of GDP. Saudi Arabia spends about 10% of its GDP on its military budget. The Arab Gulf states all have better funded and more technologically advanced militaries than Iran.

They are doing pretty well in Iraq and in Syria via Hezbollah. I think their view is one step at a time.

They also have a huge population advantage over the Saudis. Not decisive but helpful in the long run.

But I agree with you that the Iranians are (for now) likely to come in second in a direct military conflict with the Saudis.

J. Farmer said...

@Original Mike:

"Static analysis, which will be flipped with one bomb."

First, "one bomb" would not flip the situation. The most that a single bomb would accomplish is insurance against invasion, which would be the primary motive for a bomb. That said, the Iranians are not pursuing a bomb, and the multilateral deal they agreed to severely constricts their ability to make a bomb. Iran conceded to restrictions on its nuclear activity far beyond what is permissible under the NPT. It did this because it was coerced into it by greater powers. Again, the Iranian deal is evidence for Iran's weakness, not its strength.

@David:

They are doing pretty well in Iraq and in Syria via Hezbollah. I think their view is one step at a time.

Hezbollah are not in Syria; they are based in Lebanon. And they are primary concerned with agitating the Israeli occupation. A security risk for Israel, for sure, but not a major concern in world affairs. They are doing "well" in Iraq in so much that Iraq is a majority Shia country and under representative democracy its gets a government that is amenable to Iranian interests. Another victory of the Iraq war.

As far as Syria is concerned, Iran's power in the region has declined. When Assad was in power of a coherent nation-state, he provided a real strategic alliance to Iran. Since his government has collapsed, an alliance with Assad has not only ceased to be an asset, it's become a liability, as Iran and Russia have had to provide resources in an effort to prop Assad up. The chance of Assad ever regaining control over all of Syria is slim to none.

Any country that has nuclear power capability can do that, and Iran has a right to a nuclear program under the NPT. The nuclear deal increase the breakout time for a bomb.

@Gahrie:

"Yeah..useful dupe and collaborator."

The phrase is "useful idiot," and it was never uttered by Lenin. So when Israeli intelligence concludes that Iran is not building a bomb, are they being "useful dupes and collaborators" too?
