"I just love to sit in my office and make up ways so they’ll write these stupid stories because they are just so stupid, it’s awful."

Said Maine Governor Paul LePage, who just got me to write that because I'm so stupid, it's awful.

I don't think he thought that one through.

His remarks do seem impolitic, but a person can only stand to be lied about so much... either we should expect politicians to vent occasionally, or I guess bring back dueling.

"Shame on them. ... They're so bad," LePage told the radio station.

LePage went on to call the media in his state "vile" and "inaccurate."

“The sooner the print press goes away, the better society will be," LePage said, before noting that his office has taken to using Facebook Live to get around reporters.

"We ignore them and they get even angrier," he said.

In 10 years we will look back at 2015/16 and the people who believe in freedom will thank god Trump came along and showed people how to do this right.

Sometimes gotcha journalism backfires. If they focused on the reasons for the shutdown instead of the rumor that the Gov. was going to Florida during those four days they would not have looked like fools. He wrong footed them. Every person in the press post Watergate thinks they are going to bring down the man with their super dooper "investigative" journalism.

Sources tell me that Governor LePage IS going to Florida in disguise as an Arab transgender in a burka. And he has a double who will stay behind - the double likes the Governor's life, especially the pistachio ice cream since the rest of the time he's awaiting aliens in a double wide in northern Maine. "CNN seems like prep for when the aliens come, ayup", Slim Jim told my sources.

"To your request of my opinion of the manner in which a newspaper should be conducted, so as to be most useful, I should answer, "by restraining it to true facts & sound principles only." Yet I fear such a paper would find few subscribers. It is a melancholy truth, that a suppression of the press could not more completely deprive the nation of its benefits, than is done by its abandoned prostitution to falsehood. Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day. . . . I will add, that the man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods & errors. He who reads nothing will still learn the great facts, and the details are all false."

The press writes about him, like he is a country bumpkin, and thus he will never be anything except a man who steals food from welfare babies mouths.

The thing is, he is a country bumpkin. The only reason he graduated from a college, was so they didn't ship his ass to Indochina. (a country where his first language was spoken). Hell, you didn't even have to speak English to get into the college.

Any time a man actively avoids conscription, you have the makings of an evil mind.

I would say, in his old age, he has nothing left, but an evil mind. He is losing the war against mass media. Mass media is the forces against him at Waterloo.

Arrogance is a sin. He's a Catholic, so he knows that, which makes it worse.

Proverbs 16:5 Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
be assured, he will not go unpunished.

I've been saying for years that we need real newspapers with real reporters. Sadly we don't have them.

@Paco Wove: Great quotation from Jefferson, who certainly knew what he was talking about, given that he used friendly publishers to spread false and malicious stories about his political opponents.

As for LePage, I've been in Maine in July and in Florida in July, so I know that the rumour is implausible. Cape Cod I would believe, even the Jersey shore (if Christie's house is available), but not Florida.

I'm a Mainer and voted for the Guv. He IS a little rough around the edges, I admit.

On the other hand, some time ago, the local NPR was talking about some proposal LePage had. It went like this....

"Governor LePage has a proposal to deal with the problem of homelessness*, but critics say...."

No wonder he's a little cross.

* Or whatever it was. We never heard what the governors proposal was. Only what "Critics say"

Yes. But I wasn't drafted. Retired (1971-1993). So it goes...

They get mad because they are, as an industry, the walking dead. Intermediary reporting is dead. This is the new world of pocket HD cameras and millions of channel options to the end viewers.

I'll bet at one period of time in the early 1900s the horse tackle and buggy sellers were mad when they saw automobiles go by.

Godfather, you're absolutely right. Northerners don't go to Florida in July if they can help it. Maine's journalists must be stupid even by the standards of journalism.

I don't think that's true at all.

The problem with the Press is collusion. There isn't enough competition to get the best story; rather, everyone is trying to write various angles on the same story. See: Journolist.

I sure hope that's the creepiest thing I read all day. Makes me ashamed to be a member of the same species.

His wife, Ann, has taken a job as a waitress in Boothbay to supplement the family income, as LePage is the lowest-paid governor in the US and the family is of limited wealth.

Maine seems like a weird place. Is the unpretentiousness pleasant, or sad? I've never been.

Having been homeless as a child, Governor LePage has more credibility on the issue of homelessness than his critics do.

Our friend Etienne may beg to differ.

You might be interested in perusing this blog, by a resident of Rumford ME, who is from away. Away in this instance being Massachusetts. To a Mainer, if you aren't born and raised in Maine, you are from "away." Sippican Cottage.

I would say, in his old age, he has nothing left, but an evil mind. He is losing the war against mass media. Mass media is the forces against him at Waterloo.

LePage has been in a war against the media for years. That war didn't begin last week. He has been in elected office since 2003- and Governor since 2011. His bluntness has made him a media target from the first time he ran for elective office. As he is serving his second term as Governor, LePage hasn't done that badly in his war against the media.
