And show some love for the Althouse blog by using this link — which is always in the sidebar — when you shop at Amazon. Here's something we bought, loved, and just bought more of: Tiny But Mighty Heirloom Popcorn.

Bless 'em all, bless 'em all;
The clothing and shoe stores and all.
Bless all the vendors at the giant Food Court;
There's plenty of parking, I'm pleased to report.

So we're going to shop at the Mall,
To buy a new wardrobe for Fall.
We'll take in a movie, and check out the jewelry,
And we'll do it all at the Mall.

feel free to add a verse.

The cakes look kinda gay.

I whitelisted this site on my ad blocker, but I'm not seeing ads. I shouldn't complain, but maybe Althouse should.

Idea for a podcast: "WikiWhat" (lousy example; ultimate title TBD). Spend an hour or two interviewing people with Wikipedia entries. Go over what their entry says and interview them about accuracies or inaccuracies. Who are the people writing these things? Where are they getting their info? Are there details that surprise the subject in their specificity? Rip off Lipton's Pivot questionnaire: (1) Have you ever Googled yourself? What were you looking for? What were you surprised by? (2) Have you ever read your Wikipedia entry? What was your reaction? (3) Have you ever edited your own Wikipedia entry?

Is this inside baseball uber nerdism? Perhaps sell it to C-Span? Thoughts?

My wife says Brennan’s took a big hit in the recession and the fellow that owned it decided to close it down. However, a group of employees is trying to reconstitute it. They have a store over by/on Junction Rd.

adss: the Kornheiser statement was insane.

“The No. 1 job in America, the appointed person, is someone who doesn’t understand the people and really don’t give a fuck about the people,”

OK, LeBron: what did Trump do to show he doesn't "understand the people"?

It may be the one thing he does understand: both the people who support him, and the people who oppose him.

Other than not doing what lefties want him to do, why does Trump give less of a fuck about "the people" than O? He wants them to get richer, he wants more stuff to be produced here, he wants black unemployment to be low, he wants a wall that helps low-skill workers (or so they think), he wants LeBron's buddies in blue states to pay higher taxes: what's not to like by "the people"?

Trumpian populism, for all its obvious faults, is all about giving a fuck about the people--the American people.

Sprezzatura said...

Sebastian,

If DJT populism gave an F about the American people, he wouldn't be fire selling off the country's future (literally e.g. resources, and figuratively e.g. debt) so that the elite can be even more elite re normal American people.

Not to mention his corrosive jabber, e.g. his claim that there were some very fine people who decided to travel to a city, that was not their city, that via elected gov officials decided to ditch monuments that were put up to protest the civil rights era in America. And, these very fine people (according to DJT) happened to be marching w/ folks chanting "the Jews will not replace us" "etc," and carrying torches, and one of these folks ran over and killed a [white] gal. But, I don't mention that stuff [yes, I do realize that I did, obviously, mention it, but I only did so to circumvent a loose end] because it's not the crux, it's the means. It's a means to leverage voters so that they'll be distracted while DJT et. al. clean their clocks. But, LeBron-toned folks seem to be less enamored by -- in fact, they're repelled by -- this tactic that's meant to sucker whites.

Sebastian said...

"figuratively e.g. debt" Not sure I'll have much success with logic here, but: if running up debt is the LeBron criterion for not giving a fuck about the people, then presumably O and the Dems are next in line for a little tirade.

"so that the elite can be even more elite re normal American people" You don't have to convince the conservatives around here that the system is rigged for "the elite" but the most notable effect of the recent tax law is to make LeBron's buddies (i.e., a chunk of the actual elite) pay more. Now that's caring about the people.

Sprezzatura said...

lang,

Nobody can say that Lebron did more w/ less than DJT did. Unless yur a liar.

So, if you want to say that Lebron's POV re folks suceeding in America is shit, you must say that DJT's POV is 2X-shit.

In that case, I'd go w/ 1/2-shit. Less shit is better than more shit, IMHO. [OTOH, maybe yur the sorta person who's into Casu Marzu. I dunno.]

Right lang,

Sprezzatura said...

"Perhaps everyone who thinks they got a tax cut are really members of white supremacist militia groups."

Drago,

Sure, some normal folks got tax cuts. But, percentage-wise re the total cut, the big dough goes to the big dough folks. Which makes sense, they make more, they pay more, they should get more back.

The problem is that every penny, and more than every penny (interest), of these cuts are stealing from future tax payers and giving to us now. So, the biggest dollars that are now being stolen from future tax payers are going to the richest now.

Presumably you normal people tell yourselves that the future rich people are going to equivalently payback what current rich people are taking from the future. Or you tell yourselves that big growth will make these cuts pay for themselves. Like you said w/ W's cuts and R's cuts. Not that those mantras came true. But, yur sur this time is different. [Ha.]

Anywho. Maybe.

But, I dunno. And I, and people like me, have zero reason to hang around for the payback, when the bill eventually comes due. Take the money and run. Y'all are doin' it to yurselves. So F U. My conscience is good ta go, I tried to pull back the curtain.

My experience with cakes that are too perfect like that is that they never seem to taste as good as they look, but sometimes you can dump a cube of it into your coffee and eat it with a spoon, or pour some rum, or even whiskey on it, depending on the cake, and rescue it.

tim in vermont said...

Trump’s big problem has always been that he speaks imprecisely enough that invidious interpretation, like adds’s above, is pretty simple and people who don’t think deeply about what he says find it easy to convince themselves with certainty that their narrow and partisan take on his words is the only possible and correct interpretation. You can see what your prejudices tell you is there in his words if you refuse to give him any benefit of the doubt at all whatsoever. And “The Big Guy” knows that Trump’s sloppy language gives lots of scope for doubt.

Just for the record, I oppose parts of the new tax law and would prefer lower spending.

But the LeBron talking point was that Trump doesn't understand or care about "the people."

The tax law and the recent budget deal contain many provisions that favor "the people" over "the elite," refuting the talking point.

Of course, LeBron and KD can come out as liberals, criticizing DJT for not being liberal enough. Let them lay out what policies they dislike, why they should pay lower taxes and how that would benefit the people, why corporate tax rates should stay high and how that would benefit the people, why illegal aliens should stay and how that would benefit black people, and so on, rather than this bitching about "the people" and not coaching well enough.

"Professor: regarding the popcorn, what makes this better than, say, Orville Redenbacher? (Just being a curious popcorn addict)..."

It's not necessarily better but it is different, so it depends on what you want.

Orville Reddenbacher popcorn gets very large and puffy, if you like that texture, and it has little corn flavor.

Tiny But Mighty... well, the name says what you need to know: it's the opposite of Reddenbacher. Small but corny. Unlike some of the other small, flavorful popcorn we've tried, Tiny But Mighty doesn't have tough hulls that stick in your teeth. It's tender, though small, so it feels fully popped.
