"... Nazis of UK media... We demand freedom..."

As Israel's Netta won Eurovision 2018, UK's SuRie was interrupted by a man rushed onto the stage, grabbed the microphone, and shouted "... Nazis of UK media... We demand freedom..."

That's one way to wake up.

This is the blurb for the stage invaders book:

"This Kindle eBook will speak about the workings of the biggest Intelligent M.A.F.I.A in the world. And this intelligent MAFIA is composed by three corrupted and criminal institutions - the U.K Politics, the U.K Media and the U.K Corporations. So if you are curious to know truth of how this intelligent MAFIA works, then download this eBook and so be aware of the intelligent M.A.F.I.A Workings."

Should find a sympathetic audience here.

When I lived in London, Eurovision was one of the best nights of the year. So ridiculous. It isn't the same to watch it here, so I rarely do. But there just aren't that many 1 night international joyous spectacles anymore.

I don't understand. Is Israel and the rest of the Middle East now considered part of Europe? Or is Eurovision a world-wide competition?

The Eurovision song fest is the ultimate proof of the continent's cultural superiority.

I bow down before my betters.

Eurovision's a weird thing. A national song contest?

Funny how many of them Israel wins.

That was a horrible song, BTW.

What's the point of judges doing this shit? I get that it's not the same to go by chart performance on a continent with so many language differences, but still.

Israel hadn't won in 20 years. Before that win, 20 years ago, it hadn't won in 19 years.

Looks to me like the wins are spread around pretty well.

I agree with robother.

Why is Israel, Cyprus and Australia (for God's sake) in Eurovision?

Eurovision (and Israel's entries) have sunk a long way since Milk and Honey's Hallelujah. Hell, even since Dana International's Diva.

Apparently Israel always seems to enter songs translated into and performed in an English-language version. Not a bad "strategy."

Maybe so, but when those wins are spread to mid-east countries, etc., then I guess that stands out.

It's probably in that contest for whatever reason(s) it's in the UN's Euro bloc.

Someone needs to calculate wins per capita. Of course, it's like the Presidential vote going to the House, every country gets one vote each year. The Vatican only needs one win; perhaps they could ordain a ringer--a funky chunky Jewish girl from Israel with Mickey Mouse hair.

The Vatican! I can see a Billy Joel-type belting out Only the Good Die Young for the win.

Bill, Republic of Texas;

I agree with robother.

Makes sense to me. Cyprus is an EU member state. I would guess that Israeli descendants of European Jews (the majority of Israelis?) would feel more affinity to Europe than to any other international cultural association. (If you want to append the adjective "cultural" to Eurovision.) As for Australians, well, sidere mens eadem mutato, as the motto went, and the majority of Australians are still those of European descent.(And Queen Elizabeth still reigns there ceremonially, after all.)

Sydney University dropped the motto, by the way.

BCARM: Sydney University dropped the motto, by the way.

Of course they did. Quite a while ago, iirc. (I remember Robert Hughes talking about it. Remember when Time magazine had writers the caliber of Hughes?) Though they could have reasonably replaced it with its Chinese equivalent.

UEFA includes Israel and Turkey. UEFA even includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. The Mediterranean basin was all part of the Roman Empire and the Caucasus too.

The media are also kind of fascist, right? Someone in Europe gets it.

Please don't put ideas into the heads of any of the loopy ones currently running things at the Holy See! after having sent the Choir of the Sistine Chapel (or part of it) to the #MetGala, who knows what those people might decide to try.

Hughes was a wonderful writer and presenter. I am not very arty but I was very impressed by 'The shock of the new'.

BCARM: Thanks for reminding me about The Shock of the New. Put that on the look-up and re-watch list.

Australia is still part of the Commonwealth. Perhaps that's how they are part of it.

I find it interesting that all the descriptions and "play-by-play" are about the nations, not the performers as individual people.

But hey, just keep lecturing the US about "nationalism."

Israel probably isn't welcome, as in, probably isn't safe, in contests centered on Southwest Asia.
